Help Connect US Black Heritage Notables January 2024!

All of these U.S. Black Heritage Project Notables, born in the month of January, need to be connected to the Global Family Tree.  Can you help by adding profiles of family members until a connection to the Global Tree is made?

The current tree size as of 24 Dec and CC7* as of 31 Dec  is shown for each profile.  During the month of January we will update the sizes weekly for those still unconnected so we can all see any progress made. [Updates in Red are as 23 Jan] Even if a connection is not made, adding even a single profile to a family is helpful and appreciated!

The ten notables selected for this month, in order of their birthdays, are:

1 Jan:  Norvell Stoudmire, Tuskegee Airman pilot, KIA, CC7: 13  29, tree: 14  30

4 Jan:  Alonzo Clayton, youngest jockey to win Kentucky Derby, CC7: 2, tree:  3  CONNECTED!!

4 Jan:  Floyd Patterson, Pro boxer, Olympic Gold medal winner, CC7: 3  18 , tree: 4  19

10 Jan:  Afeni Shakur, political activist and mother of Tupac Shakur, CC7:  91 93, tree: 104 110

10 Jan:  Della Hayden Raney, WWII Chief Nurse, CC7: 6  17, tree:  7  18  CONNECTED!!

10 Jan:  Jim Vance, Washington DC news anchor, CC7: 2 36,  tree: 3  37

20 Jan:  Huddie “Lead Belly” Ledbetter, Folk blues singer, CC7:  5  43,  tree: 6  44

21 Jan:  Leonard Roy Harmon, WWII Navy Cross, Navy ship namesake, CC7: 42   tree: 191

22 Jan:  Sam Cooke, singer, songwriter, “Father of Soul”, CC7: 78,  tree: 67

25 Jan:  Etta James, famous singer of many genres, CC7:  3, tree: 4

Bonus (unknown birthday): Beebe Steven Lynk, Chemist, Medical School Dean, CC7:43 , tree: 88

If you want to add family to a living Notable, please create the family profile first and send me a request to link the two profiles.

As always, please add the {{African-American Sticker}} to any profiles of African-American people, and if you add photographs, make sure they're in the public domain.

Thanks to all those who helped add profiles this month!  We connected two Notables, and also added a ton of family members to some of the others.  Feel free to keep working on any of these, and/or help us with the February 2024 Notable list.

Thanks Katie! I'm working on Alonzo.

that's great, Denise, thanks!  Since I'm retired Navy I hope to add some family to Leonard Harmon.
That's perfect, hope you can connect Harmon!

Alonzo should be connected was not too many steps on his sister's children's side to Collins-24125 and Sauls-520. I was hesitant but I added/went through Westbrook-2851 who passed this past year - I try not to post more recent ones but this was a very clear connection (if you think I should set that profile one more private let me know) he has a FG.
Wow, that was fast, great work!  Its fine to create the recently deceased or even living profiles if it makes a connection for us (definitely set the living profiles to private).  Probably best since Westbrook's death was so recent to keep it private for awhile also.  If you do not want to stay as manager, add USBH as manager and let me know - we maintain a spreadsheet and can go back and review in a few years.  Its important not to orphan profiles that are privacy locked.
Thanks pure luck, I set the profile to private added USBH and will orphan it I think that's best it being so recent.

I'm going to start on building out the family tree for "Lead Belly." (With Sam Cooke, Etta James, Lead Belly, and Tupac Shakur's mother, this list is full of links to Black American musical royalty!)

Thanks Kristen!  Hope there are some good possibilities for Lead Belly.  Yes, this month does have quite a few musical possibilities!

Eddie Bernice Johnson (1934-2023) has died. She served 15 terms in the U.S. Congress, from Texas.

Surprisingly, I can't find a profile for her in WikiTree (neither listed nor unlisted) -- I thought I recalled that she had been a "start" person in a WikiTree Challenge, but maybe I dreamed that.

I would have started a profile for her, but I post here instead in case other Black Heritage project members know of an existing profile that I couldn't manage to find.

USBH does not have a profile for her on our master list of USBH Notables, and I don't see her in a Notables category list so I think its fine to create a profile for her if you'd like.
New profile (still very minimal because I was in a hurry to save it) at https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Johnson-145531
Thanks Ellen!  That is a super profile already!  I will add her to our master list and I will send you some directions separately for adding USBH as co-manager.

FYI, connecting Sam Cooke will also connect Bobby Womack! I'm working on the Womack side right now.

Ooh, https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Womack-2717 is in that tree, too. Three Notables!
I take it back. Just ran a WT+report and there are SEVEN Notables in that branch.
