WikiTree Tips & Tricks or What New Things Did U Discover?

Tip 1: I have some trouble when typing a biography in a profile.  I leave out words or don't always make clear my thoughts.  Proof reading is sabotaged by my dyslexia!  Solution:  Highlight the text, right click, and click on "Read aloud selection" then listen to see if it makes sense!wink

Tip 2: When posting multiple pictures in YOUR profile page, they show up on the right side of the screen!  Just remember, non WikiTree members can't see those pictures.  I posted several family pictures in my profile then told my kids to take a look.  They are not WikiTree members.  They did not see any pictures and wondered what I was talking about!  Oops!

What are some Tips and Tricks you can share?

Always be sure to spell complete words.  Don't assume everyone understands your personal abbreviations.  Remember, a forum, or a biography is not a text message.
This is great advice, Melanie.  I would also suggest spelling out complete words and acronyms in G2G.

I know I am old and stuffy but cool text abbreviations might prevent getting a real answer. It is not just the fuddy duddy folks that donʻt understand ty, lol, brb, AAUW, etc. - think of the non-English speakers.
I agree Kristina, there are lots of text abbreviations that have completely unknown meanings or multiple meanings depending on who is using them.

Think of lol, too many to even list here.

I'm not sure if this is addressing the question exactly, but the topic of G2G has been brought up, so here is some useful advice for using G2G.

On G2G:

  • Write in full grammatical sentences (with punctuation and all that) and avoid typos - especially in the question.  If you happen to make a mistake (or your cat walks all over your keyboard as you're typing), be aware that you can go back and edit it.
  • Try the G2G Help, Help search, G2G search, and/or Google search if your question probably already has an answer somewhere on the site.
  • If you have a question about a profile, add a link to the profile.  If you have a question about someone that doesn't yet have a profile, make a profile or include as much information as you can in the G2G post.
  • Don't put your email address in a post.
  • Generally, don't use G2G to contact one person. Go to the person's profile and contact them that way.
  • Don't call people out by name/ID.
Follow Ianʻs example

  * Use bullet points

  * And/or break thoughts into short paragraphs.

  * Read what you wrote before you post.

Great question, David. Thanks for posting it. I am looking at your first tip more as I was not aware of the display differences between public and public pages. I also have some trouble with creating biographies. My typing skills are somewhat limited (two fingers on a good day). I am looking forward to what other tips are shared.

David, non members or non logged in members can see photos on Open and Public profiles.

Perhaps the pictures you uploaded were for living people, or people with privacy level of red 'Only the Trusted List can view or edit the full profile.
