The Ireland Project:
Curating profiles relating to Irish people and their descendants around the globe.

Who Should Join?

If you are interested in helping to improve Irish profiles and would enjoy collaborating with a team of like-minded people, consider joining this project and working on one of the project’s many teams.

What’s In It For You?

  • Expert Help: Real-time access to some of the most experienced Irish researchers on WikiTree... join us on the project’s Discord server whenever you have a question and/or need help, or just to chat.
  • An Ireland Project badge: find new friends who share some of your own genealogical interests, and the satisfaction that comes from working as part of a team.

How To Join:

  1. Review the project page here and check out our goals, guidelines and standards. We do require that you be a member (in good standing) of WikiTree and have made at least 100 contributions to our shared tree.

  2. Request the badge by posting an answer (not a comment) to this post; comments will be removed to avoid confusion.

  3. Include with your post links to at least two profiles you've created or edited that demonstrate your understanding of WikiTree editing and formatting, good sourcing, inline citations and respect for copyright if applicable when posting pictures or text. Also let us know what team(s) you would like to be part of.

  4. Add Irish_Roots to your list of followed tags.

  5. When you receive a badge, you will be invited to join the Project’s Google Group and Discord server. You are strongly encouraged to join at least one of these groups as they are the way that project members collaborate on profiles and on activities going on within the project.

Thank you for all you do to improve Irish profiles on WikiTree.

I am interested in joining the Irish Roots Diaspora group. That makes the most sense because while two of my grandparents were born in Ireland, I'm Irish on the other side of my family also and have already traced ancestors to Scotland and Australia as well as to the United States where I live.

I'm still struggling some with Wikitree so some of my entries need work. I'm ok as long as I don't make a mistake. Then I have trouble fixing the mistake. And I haven't learned all the ins and outs of finding the documentation. I have a tree on Ancestry that has over 1000 entries of relatives who are/were Irish and I have documentation there that I can't necessarily find through the WikiTree Sourcer. But I am open to suggestions and to learning more.

Kiernan-758 and Farrell-6524 are two of my more recent entries.

My father's father (Patrick McInerney) came from County Clare (Monmore) and his mother (Bridget Connolly) came from County Monaghan (Crossduff). On my mother's side I have Fox/Kiernan/Gray (probably Granard Longford) and Brennan and a mystery Mullaney.

Thanks, Jen. I just added Irish_Roots to my tags. My time is limited but I will do my best.

I am hoping to locate some of my grandparent's family members. I have been in contact with some of my Cloonan family for many years, but I lost touch with the O'Connell side of my family. My grandfather emigrated to the US in the very early 1900s. I believe he left a couple of brothers, Daniel and Patrick, and a sister, Mary, in the Mallow area of Cork along with his parents, but they lived in the workhouses and moved often.

Hi Michael,

Thanks for your interest in the Ireland Project. I've just sent you a pm.

Hi Jen.

I sent you some updated information a while back via email but haven't heard from you. Should I start the process over?

Thanks.
Michael, I don't believe I've ever received a response to my 26 Sep 2023 note so yes, please either resend me links to the two profiles and indicate what team you would like to work on, or just restart the process.

Thanks for your on-going interest in the Ireland Project.

I'm doing cancer treatment so I can;t be much help but if there was any help for identifing ancestors of Bernard Fitzclarence Jones - WikiTree Profile it would be apprciated

by Chip Tobey G2G Crew (530 points)
Hi Chip,

It would probably be better if you post a question on G2G asking if any volunteers would be willing to help you trace this ancestor. Be sure to use the tag 'Irish Roots' so that project members will see your post. Hopefully someone will be able to advise you.

I'm very sorry to hear about your health challenges and hope treatment goes well and your recovery is swift.

I am interested in joining the Irish Project. I have connected and have met this year and last with DNA cousins in Ireland and because of their detailed documents have been able to break Ryan, Power and Kinane walls in Tipperary.

My brick wall is Carroll of County Mayo.

I also have some information on Reilly- Brady in Westmeath.

Thanks!

I feel that to be included in this project may help me break down a wall concerning my GGG Grandfather, William Tait. I have no trace of him much beyond his name, and year of birth and a possible first name for his wife, Ellen, from family bible notes.

Interested in this project as my great grandfather was from Ireland.  I have done a lot of research on his lineage. Last name Tracy. The Tracys have yet a portion of land and a rock etched in the  year the first Tracy landed on the East coast. 1700's. I think that the lineage might be useful to some searching the Irish side.

I would like to join the Irish Project.  Besides the obvious surname connection, I have four more g-g-gparents that have ties to Ireland.  I have over 200 contributions, so we're OK there.  My main Irish ancestors, Patrick McCarthy (McCarthy-7309) and Julia Bridgett Sullivan (Sullivan-19412) are at a dead end with their family in Tuosist Parish, County Kerry.  I have collaborated with a fellow researcher on probable extended family in the townland with over 100 descendants.  I'm hoping further research will change from probable to confirmed.  (I have one dna match with a descendant from that group).  Since Patrick emigrated to the U.S. around 1857, I would be most interested in the Diaspora group, as well as the County Kerry group.  I have tested with Ancestry and also Y-dna.

My ancestors on my Mothers side are McColl`s from Appin Scotland and they are from The McDonald Clan who are from the Cholla`s from Ireland, the connection to the McDonald`s is yet to be discovered; my Father has The Wallace family from his mother- and they have Irish connections.

According to DNA I am 31% Irish, I have for certain 2 Irish Great Grandparents born in 1820's in possibly Meath and County Down although they joined the military in Westmeath and Mayo respectively.  Michael Mealia married Maria Shanahan in Callan, Kilkenny in 1862, and she was born in Tullagher Kilkenny, parents were Philip Shanahan and Ellen Corcoran the daughter and granddaughter of Martin Corcoran and probably Michael Shanahan.

Francis Anderson was the son of Robert Anderson and married Catherine Graham in Preston, Lancashire before completing military service in Buttevant County Cork.  There was a Francis Anderson the son of Robert Anderson in County Down.  Catherine Graham was possibly born in County e to Offaly to Michael Graham and Anne Alford in Phillipstown, Offaly.  They had two children Robert Francis and Elizabeth probably in County Cork before she died before 1861.  Francis was pensioned off in 1861 went to Preston again and remarried Ann Allen the daughter of William Allen.  She had a previous marriage to a Slater and a later marriage after the death of Francis in Western Australia in 1867 They came to WA on the York in 1863.

I would love to find out where my grandfather Robert Francis was born and where Catherine died, possibly all in Cork. Also any other information on Francis' parents

My Grandfather was born in Ahoghill, Antrim and I am having difficulty finding more information.

My Grandmother was from the McCluney family from Dunsilly, Shilvodan, Antrim. where they evidently owned a large farm.

This is to request a badge for The Ireland Project.  I hope to be of help and search a little farther back on my Irish ancestors, which is stalled by a lack of data.

I've made 381 contributions to Wikitree.  Here is a list of some profiles I have created:

Eggleston-1093, Miceli-225, Miceli-226, Miceli-227, Kean-490, Kean-491, Kean-492, Kean-493, Kean-494, Kean-495, DeMaria-58, Fisher-16958, Malivindi-1

Thanks,

I am adopted & found my biological family in 2010 (surname Blake). I recently did an Ancestry DNA test which showed that I am 44% Irish which was not a surprise at all. I have always been drawn to all things Irish, I am "obsessed" with genealogy & love history as a whole. I have been tracing the Blake line & have gotten stuck!
