Roberts Settlement (Pioneers)

Although  “Roberts”  was the most prominent surname at Roberts Settlement, the following families and others were an integral part of the community:  Brooks, Cotton, Gilliam (Gillum, Gillam), Hurley, Knight, Locklear, Mathews, Newsom (Newsum), Revels, Rice, Roads (Rhodes), Sweat, Walden (Waldon,Waldren, Waldin), White and Winburn (Winbun, Winbern).  Black pioneers with these same surnames are found in other rural Midwestern settlements established by free people of color who migrated from North Carolina and Virginia to Indiana . Im seeking anyone whom is related to these families to confirm the connection  to mines.

Is this the Roberts Settlement that you're talking about - in Hamilton County, Indiana?

I did some searching and found a couple profiles of people that seem like they might have been a part of the settlement - Aaron Revels who was married to Elizabeth Walden and their parents/families. If you think they might be part of the settlement you're interested in, you might try contacting the profile manager of those profiles.

You might also try adding the tag black_heritage and Indiana (or whatever state the settlement is in if it's not the one I found) to get the attention of more people who might be related to those families.

You could also start a One Place Study for the settlement if you want to do some more work on it on WikiTree - having profiles for at least some of the early settlers might attract attention from more descendants. We in the US Black Heritage Project would also be happy to help you get started more on WikiTree and/or have you join the project if you have any interest in that.
