Interesting story Edna Nancy (Brewster) Johnson (1833 - 1873) has as after being widowed by her first husband Harvey she remarried his brother Acil a veteran of the 106th NYV.  

She had children by both brothers. I’m assuming it was more common in that era for a widow or widower. I see it frequently in family genealogies

It was very common. Staying alive was quite challenging during those early settlement days, then along comes the Civil war, and many young families were suddenly fatherless, so brothers, and cousins stepped up to the plate, twisting and tangling genealogy tree branches.
