Next: Batschka category, Banat is done

After the Feedback from J Palotay and the update of Space:Banat_Location_Categories (as well as the bookmarklet and WikiTree BEE to help with category creation from Wikipedia) the Category: Banat is completely cleaned up, it only has counties underneath it. The counties only contain subcategories that fit to the country; the Hungarian counties have only Magyarország categories, while the Romanian and Serbian ones only have their country as suffix.

Next would be Category: Batschka, I don't know exactly how to proceed there: The bigger part is situated in Serbia, where we currently have no county categories (and I only very low ambition to create those). So there is basically no container to collect all Serbian categories that would qualify for placement in Batschka category, since all are in the Vojvodina category, that also contains the Banat villages.

On the other hand, the term Batschka is already German, so maybe it would be an idea to place the German ", Serbien" categories in there. Do I assume correctly, that Category: Bács-Bodrog vármegye basically covers the whole Batschka area as well? Then it could be used as a synonymous category with an aka link.

Additionally there are some 600 profiles in there, where the majority might be gone after moving them to Category: Bačko Dobro Polje, Srbija (hint: the current preview version of WikiTree Browser Extension contains the new feature Category Management, which allows batch categorization of profiles, feel free to try it out on those profiles).

Category: Bács-Bodrog vármegye done, meaning

- all subcategories with other country names moved and replaced by duplicates from the Kingdom of Hungary era

- all still Hungarian places assigned to Bács-Kiskun Megye as well

- parent categories Bács-Kiskun Megye, Vojvodina and Srbija removed, because the category is about the Kingdom of Hungary

Now only 650 profiles are left for sorting. Help wanted.

170 profiles left. Some sorting help would be appreciated.
Done checking the remaining Batschka profiles for more precise location categories. Requested deletion.

Florian, I am amazed how quickly you are resolving these complex problems.

Are these two categories part of all this? They have red parent categories that need to be corrected. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Varia%C8%99%2C_Rom%C3%A2nia and https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:M%C4%83n%C4%83%C8%99tur%2C_Rom%C3%A2nia

Thanks for noticing. Yes, those were related. I had to change the name to make them unique and I wasn't aware that I also saved them. I marked them for deletion now.

Is there any place, where one can see orphaned categories like these?

What do mean by orphaned categories? The red categories came up on the red category list which contains red categories that people have added to profiles or other categories (as in this case) but the category doesn't exist. It can be they just didn't finish creating it, or incorrectly typed the name, or from an error in a sticker template.

Also when you send a category for deletion, just remove all the content, so it's empty except for the Delete Category template and any reason for deletion.

Thanks. OK, I thought one might want to see what was there before, but if you want it that way, I will do that (and also teach WikiTree BEE to do that as well).

Maybe one could also include it into the Browser Extension when inserting those templates ...
I use the WT browser extension when i add the template, I just highlight all the content and add the template and all the content is gone.

Also important to check the "what links here" on a category before deleting to remove any links to the category as Editbot doesn't delete those.
Would be nice, of those two would happen automatically anyway ...

Does one also need to check links when ordering a category rename?
In a rename Editbot will change a link so no, but with a delete it doesn't delete a link as that could cause strange gaps in text if say, someone was linking to a cemetery or location category in the text of the biography on a profile. So with deletes, links need to be changed or deleted manually, preferably before sending for deletion..
Last night's preview (!) version of the Browser Extension adds the feature "Category Management", which among others creates a link to add the deletion marker even from the category page without having to manually edit it. Currently it just adds the deletion marker and optionally adds nowiki. The next preview will ask for a reason, blank the page and insert the marker, the reason and the signature. It also will check the links and tell the user to remove them, in case some are found.

Speaking just to geography, not to categories, ('cause those always go wrong when I touch 'em): Bács-Bodrog county contained about two dozen communities that are still in Hungary and about 110 communities that are now in Serbia. (See: https://web.archive.org/web/20160402120449/http://www.radixhub.com/radixhub/gazetteers/1913/bacs-bodrog.htm#068830.)

There are four places listed on DVHH's Bácska page that were in Pest-Pilis-Solt-Kiskun county and are now in Bács-Kiskun county: Császártöltés, Hajós, Harta, and Nemesnádudvar. (I did not need to do any looking up for Harta, as that's where my grandfather was the Lutheran minister.) These are basically Danube Schwabian villages (i.e., places settled in the post-Ottoman era by German immigrants) that have been filed with the Bácska for lack of any better way to include them, since they're on the wrong side of the Danube for the region called "Swabian Turkey".

(I did not do a comparison in the other direction, to see which places in the gazetteer do not have corresponding entries in the village list.)

Thanks. I'm coming to the same conclusion after receiving some replies at German Donauschwaben category in Compgen's Discourse. Therefore I made Category: Batschka now a subcategory of German Ungarn and Serbien categories and an aka category of Category: Bács-Bodrog vármegye (which is now also no longer a member of the Batschka category for that reason.

Currently there are probably a lot of aka categories not synchronized, but those should be fine within the next two days, so the red links in the orange boxes should disappear and be replaced by nice links to the language alternatives.

I ain't touching the categories myself, but the one labeled "Maria-Theresiopolis, Magyarország" is exactly the same thing as the one labeled "Szabadka, Magyarország". (Dunno why, but the re-naming only managed to stick in Latin.)
Thanks for checking. Actually I was aware of this, when I created them. They are linked with template aka (just like all the language versions of the same place), so they will get automatically synced, but people will find both in the category drop-down.
The hopefully next preview version of BEE is also able to create categories for places in Hungary (I skipped that initially, because I thought only that I was doing Banat). It will get the historical county as well as the current one and it will only add an aka template if it used to be in Bács-Bodrog before. But you still will have to select the Hungarian place name. I don't know exactly how to skip this without disabling the possibility of generating German categories for Hungarian Batschka as well.
