Can someone help me understand this Protestant christening record for Salomon Elye from 1728 in New York?  The record said he is age 8, born in Hackensack, New Jersey, but christened in NY.  (His brother Johannes is also christened at the same time.)  He was likely from a Huguenot family, so age 8 seems very old to be christened in this era of new freedoms. Why might this be? If the family was moving from Dutch Reformed or French Church to Lutheran would they need to do this again? (His brother's record says Lutheran church.) I'm trying to establish if he is from the Nicholas d'Ailly/Alyea/Elyea line from Hackensack, NJ (most likely); or the John Dally of NY (Simon d'Ailly line of Belgium/France); or the least likely Jean Alle/Allee line from New Rochelle, NY.  The current familysearch.org profile for this family group seems to grab/mix pieces from all the families but they were not known to be closely related. Thank you for your possible help. https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/sources/KP46-H9X (Salomon Elye)

These baptisms probably were done by the New York Lutheran Church. The church was based in the City of New York, but it conducted worship services and performed marriages and baptisms through a large swath of New York and New Jersey.  FamilySearch has an annoying practice of indexing all the records as "New York City."

Many of the records for this church are compiled in the Year Book of the Holland Society of New York for 1903. Follow the linked text to get to a WikiTree webpage that has information about the online locations where this book can be read or downloaded for free (and look for the 1903 year book). The text is is a chronicle of the minister's activities and is only semi-chronological. For that reason and because name spellings can vary, I suggest searching the text by terms like "1728" and "Salomon" until you find the baptisms you are looking for. The text typically tells where the baptism occurred, but you may need to read a couple pages to figure that out.

If you don't find the record in that book, see this other link on WikiTree for additional places where some of this church's records might be found.

Hold the phone.

That Holland Society Year Book does not have baptisms from 1728. Here's what I found for Salomon in Lutheran Church Records for 1728, published in the New York Genealogical and Biographical Record:

34. 11 June, at Hakkingsak, in the Lutheran church, Salomon, 8 years old, of Niclas Elye, from Carolina, & Elisabeth. C: Henrich Beer and wife.

35. Johannes, 3 months old, of the same parents. C: Jan Evertsen and wife.

Source is New York Genealogical and Biographical Record, July 1966, Volume 97, issue 3, page 164.

Here's an explanation of the "C." in those records (explanation from NYGBR, Vol. 97, issue 2, page 94):

Three letters have been used to indicate the three types of witnesses recognized by Pastor Berckenmeyer: C. = Compeer, literally a colleague, or sharer of the father’s vows; P. = Peet(en), godparent(s); G.: Getuyge(n), witness(es).

Thank you, this is very helpful, especially as it places the father in yet another locale.
That "Carolina" reference reminds me that quite a few Huguenots apparently emigrated to the Carolinas (I'm thinking of the Huguenot church in Charleston, South Carolina).
There is also a chunk of baptismal records missing from the New Paltz RDC, which was a prominent Huguenot settlement.. I came across white a few profiles with the Daily surname, but they were at the Albany church, which is a ways up the river from New Jersey.
