I was asked off by a Wiki Tree member and I felt the following answer would be helpful here. John R. Carpenter La Mesa, CA USA
https://carpentercousins.com https://one-name.org/name_profile/carpenter/
William Carpenter (b. abt 1575 England d. aft Jan1640/1641 in Weymouth, Massachusetts Bay Colony, now, Weymouth, Norfolk, Massachusetts came to America in 1638 with his son also named William Carpenter (b. abt 1605 England - d. 7 Feb 1658/1659 Rehoboth, Plymouth Colony, now, Rehoboth, Bristol, Massachusetts).
THEIR DESCENDANTS are listed as Group 3 of the Carpenter Cousins Y-DNA Project. This being the Rehoboth, MA Carpenter branch. The descendants of William Carpenter (b. ab 1610 England - d. 7 Sep 1685 Pawtuxet, now, Cranston, Providence, Rhode Island) who came to America in 1635 are listed as Group 2 of the Carpenter Cousins Y-DNA Project. Based on 111 Y-DNA markers ...
Summary of discriminants between Groups 2 and 3: DYS464d (13 to 25 set) Group 2 = 16 Group 3 = 17 DYS413a (38 to 67 set) Group 2 = 21 Group 3 = 22 DYS635 (68 to 111 set) Group 2 = 23 Group 3 = 24 And based on Big Y-700 Testing (Y-SNPs) there is a difference in the terminal Haplotypes. That is another story for another time.

For the Group 2 members who have Y-DNA tested, see their lineages at: https://carpentercousins.com/generallineage.htm#prov
For the Group 3 members who have Y-DNA tested, see their lineages at: https://carpentercousins.com/generallineage.htm#reho
For the best scholarly reports on the two William Carpenters of 1635 & 1638 and their immediate family, see the Carpenter Sketches at: https://carpentercousins.com/carplink.htm
If you want to see some of their genealogical ancestry which includes some good notes, please look on the far left side of the following web site for those descendant reports. Look for Group 2 or Group 3 (left side of page) at: https://carpentercousins.com
Please notice other Carpenter/Zimmerman descendants reports are listed on the left hand side of the page. All of those are also backed by Y-DNA testing. You may ask why Zimmerman? Because the Germanic Zimmerman is Carpenter in English and many, but not all, anglicized their surnames. The same went for Carpentier and Charpentiers to a lesser extent.
Years ago I did a Zoom talk on the Carpenter Cousins Y-DNA Project for the North American chapter of the Guild of One Name Studies. I added some graphics for the talk and while the stats are out of date, it gives you an overview of the Project. See: https://carpentercousins.com/G.pdf In summary I have spent a good part of 3 decades working to sift the facts from the horrible fiction, speculation and out right fraudulent Carpenter lines posted on line. This by documented paper trail genealogy backed by Y-DNA testing for the purpose of genetic genealogy triangulation.
FYI - For Group 3 aka the Rehoboth, MA Carpenter line we have nearly 90,000 documented descendants on file with a little over 100 Y-DNA tests of living descendants.
