categories for place names

So I want to add a category for Burnett School in San Francisco and possibly another school as well. However, Burnett School has changed its name now to Leola M. Havard Early Education School.

How must I name the category or is it up to me?

Why?  I have school class photos for them.

Start by creating a free-space profile for the school, then upload those class photos to that page.

Photos can't be uploaded to categories. And you have more flexibility on naming a free-space profile than you have on naming a category.

I didn’t know that. I guess i will do that. And then I can add or otherwise link the free space to the category.

Then benefit of having a free space categorized is if a researcher comes to wikitree and knows their relative was from San Francisco they can drill down from there and find the topic which interests them.

Hi Lance, we don't usually categorize schools at grade school level.  Plus, although you may have class photos, do you have the info and willingness to not only create the profiles of the people pictured, but also their trees?  Also remember to consider whether they are still alive.

I don't think there is a requirement to identify and build a complete tree for every person in a photo.  If I were to post this, like I have for other such photos, I would identify who I could and enter them and their immediate family as I have done here. https://www.wikitree.com/photo/jpg/Younker-197

My question is about the naming convention of a school that has changed its name.

Also, you said we don’t generally create categories for elementary schools.  Is there a reason for that?

if someone is willing to create a category why not let them?   Imagine if I found myself with a class roster at some point for this school. Wouldn’t it be helpful to locate the school so I can offer it as support and genealogical evidence to the entire student body?

San Francisco County, California, Schools would be the parent category.  The school name would normally be the current one, with an aka thrown in to show prior name(s).

The reason I ask about the various profiles is that it is preferable to not create a bunch of unconnected profiles, which detract from our goal of having a single tree.

Sounds good.

my perspective is an unconnected profile can also be viewed as a hook for a relative to join wikitree, especially when a new item related to their ancestor is attached.

There will always be more people to add, one down is one less to add later. One more person finding g wikitree is one more person possibly willing to help with the workload.
As I started reading this and more carefully thinking about it, I think I will name it the school as it was known at the time, as of course the name can be changed again in the future. I guess it is like where our ancestor was born --  it may have been known as Virginia at the time, but it is now West Virgina  -- but we put Virgina in and hope someone does the extra research of lining up the years.
