Hi Wikitreers,

I need a little collaboration into Alfred’s genealogy. Per his obit he had an aunt Mrs LeFebvre what side of the tree is she from his paternal or maternal? She is living on King Street in what I believe was Northfield, Vermont. Who was Mrs. LeFabvre? A census might be the key here from 1910-1920?

Alfred was in the U.S. Army apparently stationed in Texas where he was discharge from the United States Army. Did he serve in WWI? See The Great War Project (1914-1918)

“He went to the home of his aunt Mrs LeFebvre on King street to live and commenced work for Cross brothers but only worked a few days when he was taken very ill with pneumonia and complications developed which caused his death”

What kind of business was Cross Brothers?

He died from Pneumonia was it the dreaded Spanish Flu

Where is his grave or memorial? Cemetery? The g2g also found this in previous research he is likely buried at Riverside Cemetery, Mooers, New York   Or New Mooers Cemetery Also known as Mooers Riverside Cemetery (New) , Mooers Village Cemetery (New) , New Mooers Village Cemetery and even possibly here at https://www.findagrave.com/cemetery/2576467/riverside-cemetery

Thank you

Note: needs military sticker assistance

Cross Brothers Granite Works & Polishing Mill was a granite business in Northfield, Vermont.

That’s a great source of the four Cross brothers and their company with images. I had no clue what kind of business; it makes sense. The work was not easy back then in them granite mills. His father Michael was running the Ale…

It appears the family was having a hard time getting work

Edit: sad how he was working with pneumonia in that industry at only age 21

The Application for Headstone or Marker for him says that he served as a Private in the 5th Cavalry.

The 5th Cavalry was selected at the start of World War I to remain in Texas to prevent incursions from Mexico.

I am having trouble finding it on the familysearch.org, but here is a link to an Alfred Berry in Marfa, Texas in the 1920 U.S. Census:

He fits your relative - born ca. 1902 in Massachusetts, the son of a Canadian father and a New Yorker mother, "soldiering" in the U.S. Cavalry.

A lot of lines drawn thru on the headstone app doing corrections even date of death etc. it’s a wonderful source for him as he was so young when he died.

He didn’t work very long for the Cross bro in fact maybe only days. He was very ill and working while ill.

What we do have so far

*Birth record
*2 wonderful obituaries
*1910,1915,1920 census reports
*Death certificate
*Headstone military application
*His mother tongue was French per 1920 census

The history of the Cross brothers in Vermont is historic with the granite quarries.
I found the Familysearch equivalent of ancestry’s 1920 census. A match this is the last census he is living
Just a random note

Cause of death:  empyema of left chest and lobar pneumonia means he most likely slept on his left side and it settled there…just food for thought
