"Category: Virginia Colony" (a top-level category, meaning no people profiles) was added to Thomas Harriot's profile. In looking for a more appropriate category, I realized that there isn't one.
I'm leaning toward just "Category: Roanoke Colony" as being more recognizable than "Category: Roanoke Island", and I think "Category: Roanoke Colony, Roanoke Island" would be overkill. Although _really_ recognizable, I don't want to go with Category: Lost Colony of Roanoke, since that would seem to imply only the colonists who disappeared should be included.
Many people look for information about the "Lost Colony of Roanoke" under Virginia, but today it would have been in North Carolina & I think that most North Carolinians and many Virginians consider Roanoke Colony to be part of North Carolina's history, not Virginia's (which is a long way of saying that I think the category should not include a "state", justified further considering no states existed in the 1580s).
In addition to a category for the people associated with Roanoke Colony... Does anyone know if any of the ships in Grenville's fleet, Drake's fleet, or any of the supply/relief ships have categories? I think that having a category for "Roanoke Colony Ships" would be appropriate and when/if categories for specific ships that sailed to or from Roanoke are found/created, they could be added as subcategories of "Category: Roanoke Colony Ships". (Reading about the Roanoke fleets, they seem a bit fluid - see Wikipedia's [
Roanoke Colony] article.)
Anyway. I think that unless discussion here indicates different options would be better, I intend to create* two new categories over the weekend: (1) Roanoke Colony (2) Roanoke Colony Ships
Thanks in advance for any feedback!
* Categorization Project - is that ok? Can I create the two categories - one for the people and one for the ships? Or is there some form I need to fill out or other protocol that I need to follow?
