See a profile Edit Page in readonly mode? [closed]

WikiTree is collaborative. And we should learn from one another to get a similar style … So sometimes I would like to see the edit page of a profile to see how this or that was done …

How to call it? The edit page, the source code page, the origin page?

  • If I'm not allowed to edit the profile, than I cannot see how they made it.

  • If I'm allowed to edit but only want to take a look, than it saves the draft, even though I didn't want to change.

Is there a possibility to see the origin code in a readonly mode?

Hi Siegfried. You can use the WikiTree API for this. The getBio call can return the Biography markup for profiles with Open and Public privacy. See

https://apps.wikitree.com/apps/wikitree-api-examples/getBio/javascript.html

and

https://github.com/wikitree/wikitree-api/blob/main/getBio.md

Also there's a getmarkup app by Steven Harris.

Hello Jim,

what you linked is not what I wanted to have, but it's much better than nothing … smiley

The apps only ahow the bio section but not the fields section.

But as I stated: It's more than nothing!

I'm glad this was at least some help, Siegfried. Thank you for the star!

As for the fields, can't you see them on the profile itself? But if you like and can interpret the JSON format, you can try getProfile here:

https://apps.wikitree.com/apps/wikitree-api-examples/getProfile/javascript.html

The Steinbeck profile is Open. It's project-protected, but that should not prevent access to the profile history and the source data.
That solves the issue in Siegfried's first bullet point, but not the one of creating a draft (potentially locking out other people) in the second bullet point.

Ellen and Jim,

you are both right … laugh

John Steinbeck was the example for the second point. I wanted to check something, because I was editing profiles of his ancestors. And then a draft was created, and i thought – oops! I don't want to destroy anything or block anyone else.

But a readonly edit page laugh would also solve the first point.

The app from Jim can show me the biography.

And the fields are not on the profile page, nor the settings. Only the Result – no certain or something like that. And also not the different name fields, only the result name.

Thanks Siegfried, I agree.

If instead of getBio you use getProfile at

https://apps.wikitree.com/apps/wikitree-api-examples/getProfile/javascript.html

and set the Fields to blank, you can see almost everything, including name fields and data status.

Thanks Jim, very good.

I tested the app, but I didn' cleared the request fields. So I was a bit disappointed …

So I think, I can get all information with the apps getBio and getProfile, even more than on the profile itself …

So a readonly edit page (don't know a better description laugh) is not really neccessary, but gives more comfort and a neatless look and feel …

Ok, Siegfried, I'm glad this is a workable approach.

The getProfile output is intended for computers not humans, so is not pretty, but it does contain the required information.
