On the profile for H0bbs-1132, I enquired about the following situation. I never heard anything about the issue and am interested to see if anyone has any knowledge of the very early Hobbs family that is supported. Thanks for the assistance.

Does anyone know exactly how this marriage and these children are "known", even though they are not proven? I am trying to understand the statement. There is a great deal of controversy over Vincent Hobbs and Mary Shelby as his wife. I have seen documentation on this website that lists under Job Thomas Sr (Thomas-50341) records indicating that Vincent Hobbs married Ruth Thomas in a land deed/survey from her father. This confusion over wives has been ongoing for many years. "known children of Vincent and mary Shelby Hobbs (order of birth not proven) were: William, who was killed by Indians; James, who enlisted in a company to go against the Indians and was on the frontier, lost to his family and presumed dead, for 21 years; Joel, who also served at the Battle of King's Mountain; Ezekiel; Vincent, Jr.; Abner, who married Peggy Rigder; Absalom; Polly, who married John Benham; Rachel, who married John Russell; and Rebecca, who married William Blanton.

M, I have retagged your question to include US Southern Colonies which encompasses colonial Maryland.

One of the chief confusions I find is that we have a Sr and Jr yet Juniors profile contains info on Senior. Senior info needs to be removed from Junior. It also appears, though I did not dig into this in detail, that there’s some undocumented family lore mixed in with documented fact which is causing conflict. If a USSC team member familiar with the family or this part of Maryland can have a look, I would suggest anything not documented gets moved to a Research Notes section so the profile can go back to square one working only with documented information to begin sorting out the conflicts.

Edit: also, the question is actually about the parents and their children of this profile?
I think you are absolutely right. Senior's information is also listed in part under Jr adding to the confusion. I am a USSC member, but I have not been at it long enough to go in and clean this up the way it needs to be. I'm trying to understand why the statements have been made and where the sources are on these profiles. They seem to be documented with family lore and unofficial family trees.

Thanks for your response!  I feel like I'm at least not wrong in my thinking over the situation and profiles.

Hi, M. I tried to work on these profiles a bit in connection with my Blanton ancestors, but got frustrated and put it down for awhile. All the profiles really need a complete rewrite with all the uncertainties accounted for, but there are branches of the family who are very attached to the myths, so it's difficult. There are a few sources that build a rough outline of the family.

The Blanton Bible records the marriage of Vincent Hobbs, Sr., and Mary Shelby, and their daughter Rebecca's marriage to William Blanton.

Much later, Job Hobbs completed an interview for his pension application where he lists all his siblings, and gives his mother's name as Ruth Thomas.

From those two documents, we know Vincent had at least two wives, we know the names of his children, and we know at least any children born from Job's birth and later were Ruth's. There are also apparently land documents somewhere that name his wife "Hannah." I personally believe this is evidence that Vincent, Sr., had a third wife, but that was a controversial suggestion.

That's basically what we know from contemporaneous sources. Only two children, Rebecca and Job, are connected with certainty to a mother. The rest need more work.

Ashley, I don't see either the Bible or the pension application cited on the profile. That would go a long way to explaining the situation.
They're in Vincent Sr.'s profile. The Bible is cited directly, and the pension is referenced indirectly there, and quoted on Job's profile. It is also quoted in full at the Hobbs Family California site, which incidentally, is one of the better researched and impartial profiles I've seen on the Hobbs family. It's source #4 on Vincent Sr.'s page.
Ashley,

Glad to hear someone else is frustrated with them as well! I've been beating my head on the wall with these people for awhile now. There are land documents that have the name discrepancies. I do have copies of those.  Like many of the documents, it is difficult to figure out which Vincent they are referencing, Sr or Jr. There is a theory floated out there that those land documents were for Vincent Jr and his wife, Hannah.

Mary
Yup, you are definitely not the only one! That would make sense if the land records are for Jr. instead of Sr. I'm pretty sure those records are how Mary Shelby acquired an undocumented (and historically unlikely) middle name, and a very confused timeline when compared with Sr.'s second(?) wife, Ruth.
