PLEASE ANSWER THIS POST TO JOIN THE GERMANY PROJECT: If you have a question about German Genealogy, please create a new G2G post with your question (click on "Ask A Question" above) and add the tag "Germany". Thanks!

The Germany Project is seeking members to join us as we add and improve the profiles of our German ancestors (those that lived in the country we now know as the Federal Republic of Germany, formerly the German Confederation, Prussia, Holy Roman Empire, etc.).

The Germany Project covers all things German, including 16 regional teams, functional teams for translation and profile improvement, as well as historical, migrational and special-interest teams. If there’s not an existing team that covers your area of interest, just let us know and we can look into adding one. Take a look at our main PROJECT PAGE for links to our teams.

The Germany Project is a helpful community that encourages collaboration between people from all around the world. Along with sourcing, connecting and improving German profiles, our project is developing a German portal, which will make it much easier to collaborate with German-speaking members. The future of the Germany Project is bright with possibilities and it’s a very exciting time to join us.

Membership is open to all who have:

  • signed WikiTree’s Honor Code
  • been a WikiTree member for at least 3 months, and
  • made at least 100 contributions to our shared tree

Joining is easy … just post an ANSWER below (as opposed to a comment or reply - note that comments will be answered but then hidden).  Please state:

  • that you'd like to join the project,
  • what your German-related interests are, and
  • what you want to contribute to the project.

Our only contribution requirements are: (1) you respond to twice yearly check-ins, and (2) you improve one German profile every 6 months.

The only thing you’ve got to lose is a brick-wall or two!

P.S. You don't have to join the project to add the German Roots sticker to your profile ... simply copy the following and add it to your profile:

{{German Roots Sticker}}

I would would like to join and find  out more information about where Prusia ends and  Germany begins .

"[B]y Law No. 46, which was accepted and implemented by the Allied Control Council on 25 February 1947, Prussia was officially proclaimed to be dissolved." (from: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prussia)

Thanks Oliver , on my gggrandfathers  passport he was asked where he was going to , his reply was new confederation   but landed in Baltimore Maryland USA  , would new confederation be the port he left from in Germany ?
Which year would that have been? "new confederation" is not a name for a German location. Usually, emigrants left from Hamburg or Bremen. Could he have meant that he intended to go to the Confederate States during the 1860s War?
the year they left was  may 8 1886  , his residence was nassau

Until 1866, the Duchy of Nassau was part of the German Confederation. In 1866, the Austro-Prussian War started. When that was over, Nassau was occupied and incorporated into Prussia as Province of Hessen-Nassau.

Mike, you already are a member of the Germany Project.

Yes I would like to join the German Project.  My great grandfather was born on a farm 10 miles outside of Osnabruck.  He immigrated at 17 to America.

Hi, I'd like to join the project.  I have a lot of research on an old German family that ranges from 1108-1600's and affiliated families.  Original hardcopies of published secondary source geneological researchers from Germany on those families.  I can input the raw data as well as upload scans of documents.
by Robert Reinhardt G2G1 (1.2k points)

Hi Robert,

I sent you a pm about the Germany Project, additional to that are here more informations about Pre-1500-profiles.

Okay, thanks.  Looks like I have to wait more time before I can get further into the project.  I have hardcopy documents from German publishers as reliable secondary source information when that time comes.

I would like to join the Germany project please. My interests are Gmelins and Geigers of Sinsheim, Baden-Württemberg, circa 1690s-1850s, and Kuntz family of Eschbach, Pfalz, circa 1790s-1830s. I see that my Gmelin line has been established on wikitree up until Simon Gmelin born 1569; my first contributions would be tracing Simon down to my ancestor Johann Philipp Gmelin born 1825, immigrated to Waterloo region Canada about 1846.

My name is Bonnie Hiller Fullerton, and I would like to join the Germany Project.  I am descended from German families on both sides:

Hiller - Nabern, Kirchheim, Donaukreis, Württemberg
Henkel - Wallau, Biedenkopf, Wiesbaden, Hessen-Nassau, Preussen
Terrass -
Friedrichstal, Freudenstadt, Schwarzwaldkreis, Württemberg
Ringel - Zempleburg, Kreis Flatow, West Prussia

I have found that the majority of the profiles I have added to the tree are new to the tree; I'm not often able to match to an existing profile.  I hope to add many new German profiles, including Huguenot / German profiles which are part of my Terrass background.

I would like to join the German project, as I have deep ancestry on both sides of my family. I have access to images of the original church and family books the Hesse Darmstadt archives. I have cultivated an amazing relationship with Elsbeth Kreh, who has written countless history and family books around Hesse Darmstadt, and who is a member of the Hesse Archive team.

I have also taken the time to learn German both in college and now through several language apps. I am not only interested in adding many profiles in my own family, but I love helping others by translating and transcribing very old German text. I spent weeks learning how to decipher German handwriting in records as far back as the late 1500s. Looking forward to collaborating and helping.

Hallo Dieter

I have been a member of Wiki Tree for more than three months now, added a few hundred German profiles during this time (and will continue to do so in the future), and have also signed the Wiki Tree honor code.

It would be a great honour to join the Germany Project as a volunteer. Although I live thousands of kilometres away from my family's German Heimat at the most southern tip of Africa, my German roots are very dear to me. I am 79 years old and have been doing genealogical research for more than six decades. Even as a child family histories and  anecdotes were my favourite bedtime stories.

I wish to join the Project due to my connection with the OBST ancestry, which originated from Silesia, Prussia with numerous connections to Merschwitz.   My own research takes me back to 1743.   My intention is to source information that may be available to further the history of my family and also to be able to interact with other members.
by Brian Obst G2G1 (1.9k points)
From an Australian perspective, Brian has a lot of very interesting ancestry that spoke German.

Hi,

I'm interested in joining, but worry that I couldn't contribute much. I only have limited access to source documents, and less knowledge of how to find them.  I do have a number of gg-grands who come from there and would like to learn more about them, if possible.

Also, if I wanted to add the german roots sticker, would I also be adding it to my father, grandfather, etc?
by A Lapp G2G4 (4.6k points)
Hi A,

welcome to the Project. I awarded you the badge and put a comment on your profile.

I'm not sure about the current use of the German Roots sticker, tbh. I will come back to you when I know more.
Ok, so German Roots sticker goes to the person that emigrated from Germany and people living outside of Germany. Germans who stayed in Germany don't get it.
I support this comment about the German Roots sticker. It has some meaning for the descendants of emigrants from German speaking countries.

1. I would like to join.

2. Why join ? I am a german citizen. My DNA is 50 % northgerman. I want to expand on my german ancestors within the Wiki Tree

3. What can I contribute ? I am quite good at languages. Schleswig-Holstein / Slesvig-Holsten is a complicated mix of german/danish cultures, religions etc and I have ancestors who have worked quite a bit in this field. Hopefully that work of the past can help build the Wiki Tree for "Norddeutschland/Sördanmark" a bit further :-)

Hi I would also like to join the project.
I'm also a german citizen and most of my familytree is concentrated in and around the Palatinate region.
I'm quite good at reading the latin and german church records and know where to find that information in my region.

Hallo zusammen,

ich würde auch gerne hier im Germany-Projekt mitmachen.

Mein persönlicher Forschungs-Schwerpunkt liegt in Ostfriesland, aber auch bei vielen Auswanderungen in die USA (seit ~1850).
