New member introducing myself

Hello! I'm Fiona and I'm a new-ish member. I am new to genealogy (still having trouble spelling it!). I am finding my way around this site bit by bit and I am slowly working my way through a GEDCOM file of a large family tree that my mother created over many years, and gradually adding profiles for family members. I'm also gradually working out how to find good online sources. It was exciting to find profiles of some of my ancestors already in Wiki-tree! It is fun to see how my family tree connects up here and there to other people's branches. Thanks to everyone who is contributing and helping out the newbies. One thing I am wondering is whether there are lots of little fragmented family trees in here that are not yet connected? Or are all the profiles really connected into one big tree?

I have a poem for new members, and, even though some of it may not apply, HERE IS YOUR POEM!

  • We Welcome you to WikiTree
  • We think it’s better than Ancestry
  • We’ll help you find your family
  • And all your genealogy
  • But be Warned: It’s been predicted
  • That soon you too will be addicted.
  • It happened to others, and to me!
  • Adding your family to the WikiTree!
  • The next thing here to be remembered
  • Is to upgrade to a FAMILY MEMBER
  • And then you will be kindly told
  • To click on and sign the Honor Code!
  • But, don't you fret, 'cause it's all FREE
  • This is really one great community
  • We can help you with your ancestry!
  • Thanks and welcome to WikiTree!

Navigating this site and learning all the perks, tips and tricks, takes awhile so please ask for help and advice. That being said this might help you on your journey:

Welcome to WikiTree and Genealogy.

There are many great places on the WWW to find great sources such as Familysearch.org. Many State Archives have databases online for free. Cyndi's List is another great starting place and my favorite is generally the Wiki at familysearch.org. You can pull up any Country, County, War, Topic, etc and it will lead you to several collections that may help with your ancestor.

Hope you enjoy your WikiTree Adventure.

Welcome aboard, Fiona!

About 80% of the profiles are connected. There's a connect-athon coming up if you would like to help connect some of the remaining profiles.

Good luck with your research and enjoy your journey into the past!
