Beaumont-en-Véron War Memorial OR Monument aux Morts de Beaumont-en-Véron

Question

I've recently created "Beaumont-en-Véron War Memorial, Beaumont-en-Véron, Indre-et-Loire" category, but I have doubts about the category name: following the "use their conventions instead of ours" rule, should I have named it in French "Monument aux Morts de Beaumont-en-Véron, Beaumont-en-Véron, Indre-et-Loire"?

si c'est pour des soldats français, alors oui, devrait être en français.  Si ça inclut aussi des soldats anglophones, alors c'est à voir en quelle proportion et ajuster le tir en conséquence.

My start point was a bit simpler than talking about soldiers. This region is part of present-day France.

Steve, the question was entirely pertinent, there are war cemeteries in France dedicated to US and Canadian soldiers, who did not necessarily speak French.  They are often named in English due to this.

I agree. I was only starting from the region in France. I did not know that the war cemetery was dedicated to US and Canadian soldiers. In my view, this is an example of a category that must have a parallel language mirror in English via the AKA widget.

In my view the entire Wikitree category structure in France should be built in French language. English reflections are easily added to the primary structure.

The monument aux morts celebrates the inhabitants of Beaumont dead during WW1 and WW2. It is located near the church. See : https://www.geneanet.org/cimetieres/view/221777 .

I don't know about a war memorial celebrating soldiers death near this village.

Thank you Dominique, I am actually using the photos from Geneanet to create profiles for all the soldiers whose names are on the monument aux morts near the church! But at some point, I will need to compare it with the monument inside the church, and see if they are the same. I will create another category for the monument inside the church if need be.

Hi Dominique. I think it is a misunderstanding to say that a memorial should be built to "celebrating soldiers death". There is no celebration. We commemorate their sacrifice.

In 2018 I travelled a long way to the Somme Valley. The official event was to remember the Battle of Hamel on 4th July 1918.

P.S. I have to walk back a bit. The Latin root verb Celebrare might have taken off in different directions in different countries.

Commemorate is perfectly ok for me, what is important is that their memory stays alive.

I support renaming the category to "Monument aux Morts de Beaumont-en-Véron, Beaumont-en-Véron, Indre-et-Loire." 

I prefer to use the present day official language in the country. I am not trying to say that one size fits all. I am very aware of the exceptions that need to be made for changes of country boundaries and official languages over time.

In this example, I like that the primary category is written in French. Building a parallel language category in English is easily done.

I completely agree with this line of thought. We have categories named, say, "Bretagne", not "Brittany." Zero reason not to use "monument aux morts" on this one.
