2 profiles involved. Both wives died when the Empress of India sunk.

From the discussion on the profile, it sounds like the name should not be changed until the correct maiden name is discovered.   They are trying to avoid multiples redirects....

I did try to find the maiden names. They may never be found. In the mean time the alias being used is misspelled. Standard is Unknown,,,, not Unkown. Computer doesn't like that. matching does not work. Unknown Alias team is cleaning them up. Just need a leader to lift the PPP on these two profiles.
I would like to hear from an expert on redirects.  I'm on the Unknowns team and I cause 20 - 30 redirects every day when I find the LNAB and change Unknown to a sourced LNAB. I cause a redirect every time I correct a misspelled LNAB or change a married name to LNAB. I haven't heard a computer crash, but maybe it's like when a tree falls in a forest.
I have asked someone from the team to weigh in....
This issue is primarily with multiple redirects in the same profile, one such issue Robin and I are working through now.

When you redirect a profile, the old profile still exists, and is still known to search engines, can still be linked to. But when redirects are made for minor reasons, and there is expectation that a redirect may happen in the future, this causes what we call a redirect chain. Once a redirect chain reaches a certain length, the browser will stop processing and trying to crawl the redirects, and returns error pages.

Our job, on this project, is to correct misspellings of Alias LNAB, so the computer can match names. It is part of the Unknowns Project, Unknown Alias team, that Jo and I are on.  Researching to find the LNAB and making necessary changes, to found name or the correct alias of Unknown, if name is not discovered.

Steven, so a redirect from Unknown to a sourced LNAB is good; but, a redirect to correct a spelling error is not so OK? Is it worth the redirect?

Let me repeat and emphasize my previous comment:

"This issue is primarily with multiple redirects in the same profile..."

That comment was meant strictly as a guideline and not a blanket statement about not making redirects (when appropriate).

Corrections are always good for the tree. We just need to be cognizant of the history of the profile, the current state of the profile, and what the future changes to the profile might look like. We have to remember that every change made on a wiki has a "cost".

In the case of this specific profile, Unkown-1098, I would say the change to LNAB is fine to make, since "Unknown" may unfortunately be her legacy here on WikiTree.

History: No merges and/or LNAB changes to date (meaning no existing redirects).

Current State: Correct (sourced) LNAB will be difficult to find, and many people have apparently already tried.

Future: LNAB may never be found.

Based on the above, we only talking about one redirect now, and if we are lucky, a second redirect in the distant future to a correct (sourced) LNAB. This small number of redirects poses no issues.

Thank you Steven!! Very helpful to all of us on the Unknowns team...and to everyone else as well!!
Beautiful! Steven.  Now I can sleep nights.

Well glad to hear the redirect is not a problem with these 2 profiles. Thank you Steven for explaining. Now I have to get them changed to Unknown, the only hope they have of finding their LNAB. If the (2) active team members do not make the change or allow me to make the change, normally my next step is to file a UPM. But this is a PPP https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Empress_of_Ireland_Team  so what are my choices to get this done?

Edit: Maybe the Canada Project should be the one contacted about this.  https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/WikiTree-58

Normally I would ask the project to make the change....but, any leader can make the change.
The PPP on this profile (and presumably others managed by the Empress of Ireland Project) is old. It was implemented in 2015. Since then the requirements for PPP have been changed: PPP profiles are required to be for persons 200+ years old or Notable. They must also be controversial or duplicated.

I wonder if it isn't time to remove PPP from all the Empress of Ireland profiles?
Eva, too many of them have names that can be construed as something else, or taken to be someone else.  Or merged inappropriately.  That is the main reason for the PPPs on them.  This is a commemoration project that was worked on during the centennial year of the wreck.  We've had people contact us over time to fill in the blanks, either WikiTree members or non-members, and adding family connectios etc is something I have done regularly.

Don't know why Unknowns project is taking on so about this, have just seen a message sent to the Empress project that was rather aggressive in my view.  I already added one of the Unknowns members to the TL of the profile, and told them they needed a leader to lift the PPP so they could fix the name.  I don't have that power as coordinator.

PS There are in fact several notables in the project.
