Here's the Final Proposal for Civil Decorations Categories [closed]

This post is the final proposal (step 3) for a proposal concerning the Civil Decorations categories. The proposal has two parts:

  • That the categories for Civil Decorations are contained in a separate category stream to the Military Decorations category stream,
  • That a naming standard is established for individual Civil Decoration categories.

The proposal is substantially unchanged from the first review post, except for consolidation and simplification of the naming standard section.

Full details of the proposal are on the proposal page.

Please post any questions or comments below.

Thanks for reading.

Sounds good to me, but I just thought of something.  ''Awards and Honors'' could logically include things like Academy Awards (the Oscars).  Civil Decorations however certainly would not fit as a term for those. Or do things like Oscars and Emmys etc run under a separate stream?

Hi Danielle, yes all those sorts of awards are in Prestigious Awards, under Society (as will be the top-level "Civil Decorations").

ah, ok, just took a glance, needs some work from countries other than the USA I think, see none of the Canadian awards of this type in there.  sad

Yes, you'll see there is a sub-category for Australia, ours are in there, you could do something similar for Canada.

Margaret, how is this going to affect national (for instance, Australian) recipients of Imperial Awards and Orders? I don't see Imperial Awards / Orders as British as they were designed and authorised for members of countries other than just Britain / Ireland.  As a Category, it is essential that (in my instance) Australian recipients are separated from an all-encompassing Category in which they become lost and the Category therefore of little use.  I regularly conduct searches by Australian recipient Categories.

Hi Ken, I don't know exactly what particular decorations you're talking about, but I suspect you are talking about military decorations, which are not in the scope of this proposal, only civil decorations.

As you know, there was a recent proposal on G2G covering all (both civil & military decorations). If I recall correctly, that proposal included splitting some decorations into different countries, but that proposal did not proceed.

The new leader of M&W, Natalie Trott, has mentioned the likelihood of a review of the military decorations, which will no doubt involve a lot of discussion within M&W as well as with other interested members. I can't pre-empt what that review might entail.

If segregating the Australian recipients of a decoration is important to you as a personal research tool, why not consider using personal categories, one for each decoration? That would work the same way for you, and wouldn't be affected by changes to the mainstream structure and categories. If you're not familiar with personal categories, I'm more than happy to help set them up for you.
No, I'm not talking about military decorations but, for instance, Orders such as the Bath, British Empire, St Michael & St George, Victorian, etc. Whilst they may have both military and civil divisions, they are not solely military.  Then there are awards such as the George Cross and Medal.
As outlined on the proposal page, any decorations with both a military and a civil division, will have both civil decoration and military decoration parent categories.

If the decoration category is correctly named (the actual, official name of the decoration), it remains unchanged.

Again, if you personally would like to have the Australian recipients segregated in a category, then using personal categories is the ideal solution.

You can also use WikiTree+ to search for Australian profiles in any category.

I'm more than happy to help you with either of those options.
I anticipate there will be a "See Also" link on the category page for, (example), "Australia, Civil Decorations" to "British Isles and Ireland, Civil Decorations", saying something like, "to see British civil decorations that were also awarded to Australian recipients".
