Need help from England Researchers

I don't do much research in England and don't have access to ancestry.com's English records, etc. However, I'm working in England between 1550 and 1680 and running into some date issues in some of the records I'm finding.

For example, what is date 20 Car. I, or 1 Jac. I? I assume it has something to do with Cromwell, but not sure where to look. Does it refer to the reigns of Charles or James? How do I get a date that is clear to modern readers, like me?

20 Car I is the 20th year of the reign of Charles (Carolus) I. 1 Jac I is the 1st year of the reign of James (Jacobus) I. There are various internet sites, such as https://aulis.org/Calendar/Regnal_Years.html , which will convert the regnal years into the modern calendar.

This will give you the regnal years that you're looking for. I can't promise that it will be easy to follow! http://aalt.law.uh.edu/IndexPri.html You probably need to have a better idea of what era you're looking at.
