newspapers.com clippings: changed procedure

For anyone with a newspaper.com subscription, there has been a recent major change to the format of displayed images of full pages. This makes it harder to generate a link to a clipping.

I'll show an example, starting here (paywalled link).

To make a clipping, you now need to open the "Save & more" menu at the top right hand corner, and select "Clip" from there.

You then position the rectangle around the area you want, and click "Continue" in the "Create a clipping" box at the bottom. Enter a title, for example "Elonza H. Williams obituary". Click "Save clipping."

It is not easy to get the link (at least on my iPad). The only method I have found is to click the menu symbol with three white horizontal lines on blue at the very top left, and select "My clippings". The newly created clipping will appear first. Click on its image to go to the clipping page, then copy its link using the browser bar. It will look something like this:

https://www.newspapers.com/clip/116197833/elonza-h-williams-obituary/

Maybe someone can suggest ways to streamline this process.

Edited to add: This may only apply (at time of writing) if you have a "Publisher Extra" subscription to newspapers.com, not a basic one. See Melanie's comment below.

Thanks Jim. I am also on a PC using Chrome and I got the clipping as Rob described but did not think that someone without a subscription would be able to see it. Now, I know they can!

For anyone without a subscription wanting to participate in this investigation, there are some free newspapers hosted by Newspapers.com.  One example is The State Historical Society of Missouri Digital Newspaper Project at https://shsmo.newspapers.com/.  It does appear to have a newer format.  Log-in via email, Facebook, or Ancestry is required to create clipping.

Thanks Kerry, but for me it says "Unauthorized access Please return to your institution's website or portal and sign in again." Are you reaching it through a library or other institution you are a member of?

Weird.  No special access for me.  I use Chrome but tried Firefox and got the same message as you.  It appears that my browser has cached something that allows me to go directly to that page as I got the error message in Chrome when I cleared my cookies.  Try https://shsmo.org/collections/newspapers/mdnp#list, then click on North Missouri Tribune at the top of the list, then click on Archive Home in the upper left.  That works for me anyway.  Not sure what's wrong with using the direct link.

EDIT:  It seems you need to be "sent" first from shsmo.org to shsmo.newspapers.com.  Once a cookie is set, you can go directly to https://shsmo.newspapers.com/

Great, thanks Kerry! That second method works for me (in a private browser tab without any login). I get the new-style "Save & more" menu. So this does give a way for anybody who would like to investigate to do so, as you suggest.

It works the same way on a PC, Jim. I've done a lot of clicking around, but could not find an easier way that what you described.

Thanks Lucy! i'm not surprised really that it isn't just the iPad.

Lucy, do you have a basic or an extra subscription? See Melanie's comment below.

The process does seem to have gotten more complicated.

I'm on Chrome on Mac. When I click on your "here" link above there is a bar along to top with buttons. One says "clip" and one says "share". Either can be used to create a clipping. I use the "clip" button so my process is:

  1. Press the clip button
  2. Select an area and type in a title is desired
  3. Press the "Save Clipping" button
  4. Press the "View clip" button
  5. At this point the URL is the link you can share and the Sourcer extension can also be used.

Thank you for the information, Rob. From memory, what you describe sounds quite like what I used to see before the change. In particular, there used to be a "View clipping" button which is now gone for me.

I wonder if either the new interface is browser-dependent, or alternatively if the change has not (yet) been rolled out to all users.
Must not have been rolled out to all of us, Jim, because mine tonight is still the way it's been for a couple of months now. I am still getting used to the last changes, so I'm not looking forward to another round of changes.
I'm not sure when the change happened, Nelda. I hadn't looked for a month perhaps myself, but did notice a big difference recently. There has probably only been one round of changes, not two.

Do you see what I described in the original question, or what Rob describes in his answer?
Jim, I don't have a "Save & More" button like you described. And I still have a "View Clipping" button like what Rob described which you said you didn't have. My buttons are "Clip," "Print/Download," "Share," and "Save to Ancestry."  I don't know if it makes a difference, but my Newspapers.com subscription is linked to my Ancestry.com subscription.

I know, for sure, there were some changes not too long ago. Time flies for me, so it may be longer ago than I remember, but it still feels new to me from the way it was.

Thanks Nelda. This is what I see when I open the "Save & more" menu.

Small segment of screenshot of newspapers.com page on Safari browser on iPad

The options are similar to what you describe, but they only appear when the menu is opened, not in a row.

"View clipping" never appears, even after the clip has been made.

I wonder if what one sees is dependent on which type of subscription one has -- basic, or extra.
Good thought, Melanie. I have a "Publisher Extra" newspapers.com subscription through my "Ancestry Membership with Basic".
I wondered because I have a basic subscription, and see the "view clipping" as described earlier (Rob, Nelda), and you have come to my rescue a few times with your extra sub.
It might be helpful if anyone else with either basic or extra could weigh in and confirm what they see.
Melanie, I have both Basic (which came with my Ancestry.com subscription) and Publisher Extra (for which I pay extra.)
