How do I confirm ancestors I am linking

Hello,

I have been working on my family tree for over a year and I've really been intensely on it for the last few months I've gotten so far as to where I'm showing that I'm related to Queen Elizabeth I think the 3rd, King Edward III, Henry the 8th, Ann Boelyn and Lancelot Lancaster. I have done my DNA but of course it doesn't go back this far. How do I confirm if I'm on the right track because this is nuts.

And I'm not trying to bombard you, but on my husband's side it shows he is related to people who are portrayed in the movie The Patriot with Mel Gibson the Martin family. Also other well-known persons I want to make sure that I'm on the right track.

Thank you so much,

Cecilia Martin

The quick answer is that you need to document every connection. The goal is to meet the Genealogical Proof Standard (GPS). For a brief explanation of the GPS, see https://bcgcertification.org/ethics-standards/

You can work on that here by adding profiles to yours, making sure to provide evidence for all the claims. (See https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Sources for help with citing sources.) Eventually you'll connect to existing profiles, which hopefully will be well documented--and if not, you can work on improving them. That will connect you to even more people than you've imagined!

If (when) you have more questions, please ask them.

First: you can't rely on online trees. There's a lot of garage floating around. Second: start with yourself or your husband and work back one step at a time. Third: use real sources, such as parish records, census, wills, legal records, land records. And finally: not everyone with the same surname is related. There are many separate families with the surname Martin.
