What are your personal WikiTree Best Practices?

Happy New Year!

Like many, one of my resolutions for the new year is to spend more time improving my contributions on WikiTree and making more contributions.

My question for you is how exactly do you go about adding and improving profiles? What is your personal workflow?

Is there a method or process you follow for each profile you contribute?

Is there a checklist you follow to make sure your profiles are complete (basic info, categories, stickers, etc.)

How do you get the best bang for your buck for your limited time as you work on our WikiTree?

Thanks for any words of wisdom!

Kevin

My main "work" process is to make sure any profile I am still working on is in a personal category.  I have categories like More Research Needed, Add Parents, Needs Clean-up, Add Cemetery Category, etc.  That way I don't get lost and forget a profile.  Here is an example:

[[Category:Tidwell-1228 Add Spouse and Children]]

Once I have everything on the profile, I removed the category.  I was so lost and always forgetting things until I did this!

I love this idea!
I JUST learned about Personal Categories the other day. I'm definitely going to start using them! Thanks!

Here is a suggestion:
Bring up your watchlist
Click on the Edit date so you see the oldest ones.
Review some of the old ones - If you are like me some of the first profiles that I made are not very good and need a refresh using the skills and tools you have acquired since then.

Edit: There is a app Bio Check Version 1.4.3 that you may find useful.

https://apps.wikitree.com/apps/sands1865/biocheck/
Note:  I have not reviewed any of your profiles and am not criticizing your work.  I'm just saying some of my early ones were not great.

MOST of mine are not great so no worries! I have a lot left from the original GEDCOM import YEARS ago and I am very motivated to get them whipped into shape. Thanks for the app recommendation!
I do that too but sometimes wikitree changes something on all profiles by edibot... and than my edit order doesn't work anymore. Haven't found a better solution yet.

Profiles I add are almost always related to a profile I already added and are the result of my discovering the existence of the person because he/she is documented in one or more of the sources for the profile already here.

I start by adding the new person as a parent, spouse, sibling, or child of the existing profile.  I paste the relevant source citations from the existing profile on the initial screen.

Once the new profile exists, I search online repositories for all the records I can find and add citations for them to the new profile.  I enter the citations at the start of the biography section in chronological order and enclose them in <ref name="something"> ... </ref> tags.

Next, I use the information in the sources to write as extensive a biography as I can, attributing each statement in the biography to the appropriate source with <ref name="something" /> tags.

If any categories or stickers are appropriate then I add them as my last step.

I try to add profiles in an organized way - typically, first a parent of the already existing profile, then the other parent, then all the siblings.  When I add a sibling, I will add his/her spouse (then trying to add the spouse's parents and siblings when possible) and children, then each child's spouse and children, as far as I can go, before moving to the next sibling.

Wow Gaile! Great suggestion! I just reviewed your dad's profile and REALLY like how you have the source index at the beginning of the profile. I like how inline citations looks but always feel they are a bit unwieldy to use. This is a terrific solution!

My personal goal as a geneologist is to maintain my research as follows. This guide has never changed over many years with only 5 simple rules.

The purpose of the Genealogical Proof Standard is to show what the minimums are that a genealogist must do for his or her work to be credible.

There are five elements to the Genealogical Proof Standard:

  1. Reasonably exhaustive research has been conducted.
  2. Each statement of fact has a complete and accurate source citation.
  3. The evidence is reliable and has been skillfully correlated and interpreted.
  4. Any contradictory evidence has been resolved.
  5. The conclusion has been soundly reasoned and coherently written.

Any proof statement is subject to re-evaluation when new evidence arises.

More information about the Genealogical Proof Standard can be found on the Board for Certification of Genealogists website

I like the GPS in general, but it is so frustratingly vague and subjective when you first start out. Thankfully Marc McDermott has a great visual guide to help walk people through how to apply it  https://www.genealogyexplained.com/basics/genealogical-proof-standard/

Thanks, this is a great visual and could be very helpful to many.   There is no doubt that visuals are of great help.

Every Tuesday after new Suggestions are published I go to the My WikiTree menu -> Suggestions and improve any profile that appears on the list.

Source. Source. Source. Research to find sources then include all applicable sources on the profile.

When I am adding profiles, I will typically create a list of children under Research Notes. As I finish a child (and their descendants) I will then link to the profile and when all completed will remove the Research Notes heading. Here's one in progress https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Reed-28183 and one completed https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Scranton-209

I find other profiles to improve via a number of methods. Often I will use the BioCheck app to find a collection of profiles (based on whatever criteria) to work on. I have the BioCheck feature enabled in the WikiTree Browser Extension so that any profile I create or edit is checked before save. I use the WikiTree AGC feature in the browser extension to clean up profiles created from a GEDCOM import.

One of the most powerful tools in my toolkit is the WikiTree Sourcer browser extension. We can't say enough good things about this tool!

And, I follow the process here both for GEDCOM imported profiles and for other profiles.

Other things: here is a profile completeness checklist referenced in the 15 for 15 challenge. You will also find some guidance on the Profile Improvement Project

How you handle the children is great. I am sure that helps to keep you on track! Thanks for the suggestions and the links to the other tips!

Personal Maintenance Categories and a Maintenance Rotation (ignore the specific reminders, it is more about the main numbered entry for each day)

Do i stick to that all the time? No, but it keeps me organized without having to track it elsewhere. Work a profile for a specific reason and then remove that maintenance category, easy.

Was a significant effort to set it up on all my profiles at first, but very worth it

Someone else commented about Personal Categories. You have really used them in a powerful way. Thanks so much for the suggestion.

As you are creating profiles you should make sure they are:

Genealogically Defined

You have at least one piece of evidence/source that will lead to the identification of the person's parents, one piece of evidence/source for each spouse(s), and one piece of evidence/source for each child so that the connections between the family members are confirmed.

So, look carefully at your profiles. Is the source list complete?

1. A source that will identify the PARENTS?

2. Do you have a source for each SPOUSE?

3. Do you have a source for each CHILD?

After you have these sources for each person, you can write the biography and then go on to stickers, categories.
