GEDI Challenge (January 2023)

Hi WikiTreers,

Will you join our GEDImprove (GEDI) Challenge this month?

For this challenge, improve profiles created from old GEDCOM imports, using a "whole profile approach" described on the GEDI Space Page. From the spreadsheet pick a GEDCOM, click on the GEDCOM to open the tab, select a profile, then update the spreadsheet to note that you are working on the profile. When you finish the profile, return to the spreadsheet and update the status for that profile.

There is no individual challenge scoring, but we are tracking our collaborative effort for the month, and showing our progress on individual GEDCOM. You will gain contributions, and we are collectively improving the tree.

Last month there were 778 profiles improved with 425 of those via GEDI.

If you want to work as teams, urge each other on, or just chat, join us on the gedi-challenge channel on Discord.

You are welcome to post here to let us know if you are participating, but it's not required.

Post here, or ask on Discord, if you have any questions!

News:

* There were 7540 profiles improved via GEDI during 2022.

* The Bates_Robert_N.GED GEDCOM has been added to the GEDI list. These are mostly Post-1700 profiles in Massachusetts and Maine. Can we improve the remaining 130 profiles this month?

* There are several browser extensions that can help you improve GEDCOM imported profiles. The WikiTree Sourcer extension will help you find sources and generated biography text using those sources. Both AGC and Bio Check are in the WikiTree Browser Extension. Use AGC to clean the GEDCOM and Bio Check the profile by Saving a Draft.

I've been doing this for awhile now.  My GEDCOM uploads from when I first started on WikiTree....some are pretty clunky.  LOL

I use the WikiTree Sourcer to make short work of them.  Then upgrade those to Evidence Explained guidelines when and where needed.  Takes a little time, but worth it.

LJ, have you checked out the AGC App?  It is now part of the Wikitree Browser also.  It does a great job at cleaning up old Gedcom formatted profiles that use Span anchors. I always review to see if things were changed correctly so the profile isn't missing anything. There is usually a Research Notes section with any problems found.  Make sure to check out the Options that can be reviewed and changed for the app or in the extension for that section.

Thanks Linda, but most of my Profiles from GEDCOM's were generally cleaned by me when I originally imported them.  When I said clunky, I meant the sources with those span ids or with no real links.  Using WikiTree Sourcer gives me what I need to replace that cra....stuff.  LOL

I quit adding by GEDCOM in 2020 when the GEDCOMpare utility started to create those single paragraph run on notes and sources and just add manually now. Mostly I am just going through to update the sources from Ancestry to Familysearch, when available, and using Ancestry Sharing links when only Ancestry has that record. When the source references a printed source such as a history of a location or family name, I will research that title and if possible add a link to an online source. Also updating their formats to be more consistent.

Right now I am not adding some of my family data until I get all of older Profiles up to date.   I try not to say or do anything about any other member Profiles, unless they fall under the purview of my family relationships, until I get all of my ducks in a row. Physician heal thyself sort of thing. ;)

When you have profiles with the Span still in them, the AGC utility could save you a bunch of time.  Then it would be a quicker review of what was done, check the research Notes created and start using Sourcer to replace each citation created.

In case you are not aware, there are some great space pages that have Family Genealogies and Sources by Location.  If you find a source in one of those the citation is already created, just modify it a bit to remove the span, if you don't want to use the span.
