What category should Marie Anne Dubois be in? [closed]

She is currently categorized as Amerindienne, a category that has been placed in a maintenance category for review.

She lived in Canada, so I assume falls under Canada's First Peoples project.

I hope someone from that project will see and respond to this query. Thank you.

My first thought is to source the fact she is actually First Peoples.

I don't have access to PRDH (the one 'source' on her profile) but I did find her marriage in the Drouin Collection at Ancestry.

It reads in part, ''Marie Anne Dubois, native des pays..'', which certainly supports the First Peoples argument but does not help us identify anything else. No parents are listed. Just how did she come to have a surname of Dubois? Unless someone designated her with it, since it translates literally as "of the woods".

Her burial in 1766 provides no further clues.

It should be noted though that on both her marriage and burial, they spell Louis' surname as Gastonguay, not Castonguay.

Perhaps Amy or Danielle can provide their insight as well.

hmm, so far no evidence, the marriage record says about here ''native des pays d'en Haut du gouvernement de Montréal'', ie native of the up-country in the government of Montréal,.. The term Native in this instance does NOT denote being of native origin but just says where she was born.  Could be Détroit or any other place that got classified with that location name.  Her parents are not named on the marriage.

There is no mention of her being native on any of the records for the marriage, which are very few since she died 5 years after the marriage.  Again, no mention of her being native on funeral record.

I think somebody ''assumed'' that she was native.  Only one daughter from her, others are boys, and on the single marriage found, she is named Marie Anne Saint-Onge.

Have categorized her with known locations and removed the Amérindienne category, as unproven.

I will leave it to the Canadian First Peoples project to change her LNAB, add the explanation Danielle has provided above, and to remove the Ameriendienne sticker.
