Sticker for Nursing and Medical Pioneers

Hello, I am setting up a team to work on Australian Nursing and Medical Pioneers. So I thought it would be appropriate to ask about stickers. For the Australia Project, it is about Nurses or Doctors who were instrumental in some way in developing the first hospitals and health services, and then in their role in development of professional or clinical improvements. They would not all be "Notables" as they would not all meet every criterion for that category. It is also more than just being in that occupation but some significant contribution - either to their profession or to healthcare. I wasn't sure whether it would be better to have one sticker for Nursing and Medical Pioneers, or two, one for Nurse Pioneer and another for Medical Pioneer.

For those not familiar with the accepted terminology, "Medical" refers to doctors only and does not include Nursing. Health Professional can include any professional working in Health care. Clinician refers to any health care professional working in a clinical role.

While this is important to the Australia Project, I would think other countries would also be interested in nominating their Nursing and Medical Pioneers. However, if that is not the case, then I am happy to propose stickers for Australian Nursing and Medical Pioneers.

thanks,

Melanie

Wouldn't existing sticker images for nurses and / or doctors work?
(Using the existing occupation template.)
Would health care pioneers be more general and could include physiotherapists, radiologists, and other related professionals.

I am also not sure about the criterion for a pioneer. Perhaps that would best be identified by a combination of health care worker and then notable with notable identifying the significant contribution they made.
I was thinking it was more special than just their occupation - as in they contributed above and beyond just doing their job. It's a recognition of their work.
Yes, I agree. I also think all health occupations are important, but Nurses and Doctors were the original occupations (although even they were predated by dentists, butchers and nuns etc) while the other specialities evolved later.
There are also, of course, scientists who have made significant contributions to health care. But for this project, I am looking more specifically at people in their clinical role, those who worked as doctors or nurses with people. So I wanted it to be more closely linked to those specific occupations.

Pioneer, in my opinion, just means they were an early starter, and forged ahead - possibly against opposition, but did so with passion. The contribution itself might not be enough to make it into the "Notable" category, but yet it is worth acknowledging. Someone who meets this criterion might only be known in their local area.
Actually, the more I think about it the more I think that the members of each occupation would prefer to clearly have recognition for their specific occupation. So I think for my project, it is better to have two different stickers, one for Nursing Pioneers and one for Medical Pioneers. This paves the way for other health care pioneers to have their own professional pioneer sticker. But I guess it comes under a larger template for Health Care Pioneers. But for the actual sticker on the profile, Health Care Pioneer would be too broad and not giving recognition to that individual's achievements in a way that would be acceptable to the members of that occupation.

As a nurse, I am specifically interested in Nursing Pioneers. And there are many! I would expect that most other nurses would feel the same way about the influencers in our profession and wanting them recognised as Nursing Pioneers, rather than Health Care Pioneers. But I'd be interested to hear the view of other nurses on wikitree.
I agree that it would be best that the members of each occupation have recognition for their specific occupation.
Melanie, how will you define 'pioneer'? Will it be confined to a time period or to the wider nursing and medical fields, or are contemporary pioneers also included, that is, those who are stepping out today in their respective hospitals, universities, research laboraties, etc.
My definition of pioneer is anyone forward thinking, leading the way, starting a movement, building on a new idea. And success with that venture, ie it proved to be useful.

I think a pioneer can be historical or from the present day... provided there has been enough time passed to evaluate their contribution by their contemporaries.

I'm open to hearing other definitions.

We have some suitable stickers that could be adapted by being more specific with the text

For example

{{Occupation|image=ADWP-255.png|text=was a Nurse.}} and replace the text with Nurse was a nurse who pioneered ...

So for example https://www.kirraservices.com.au/vale-jilipia-jones-eye-health-pioneer-nurse/

Jilpia Nappaljarri Jones 1945 - 2021 was a pioneering aboriginal nurse

I suspect she does not yet have a profile and it might not be appropriate since she is relatively recently deceased.

Another example is Katrina Zepps 1918 - 1980 ADB https://adb.anu.edu.au/biography/zepps-katrina-12092 and wikipedia  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katrina_Zepps (no wikitree profile yet) who received an Australian MBE for her services to nursing.

Searching the ADB under occupation https://adb.anu.edu.au/biographies/occupation/?occupation=nurse+%28general%29&rpp=200 they have 121 nurses

The oldest is Margaret Catchpole https://adb.anu.edu.au/biography/catchpole-margaret-1886 and a wikitree profile https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Catchpole-401 though does not mention her nursing - I have updated the profile https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Catchpole-401&diff=161620272&oldid=160317620 and added [[Category:Australia, Nurses]] and the sticker {{Occupation|image=ADWP-255.png|text=was a Nurse in the Colony of New South Wales.}} not sure the image is a great one for a woman who died 1814

Thanks for that Anne. That could work.

LOL I don't think I am going to have any difficulty locating suitable people for the profiles. I know I've been to the Katie Zepps library - though I can't remember where it's located - possibly the College of Nursing, or possibly Sydney Uni. It's the defining the project guidelines and thinking about things like stickers that are taking my attention at the moment. But thanks for the suggestions. smiley

Perhaps you could be my first recruit to the team?
