Halp! Need to merge duplicate Samuel Gorton family trees!

There seem to be six generations of Samuel Gorton and his descendants who have duplicate profiles as a result of an unreconciled family tree imported in 2017.

EDIT: For clarity, there is one lineage where the profiles are well documented with bios and sources, and a duplicate lineage with neither bios nor sources.

Can some kind soul check my work and confirm that these proposed merges are good?

Samuel Gorton (-bef.1732) merged into Samuel Gorton Sr. (bef.1593-bef.1677)

John Gorton (-aft.1752) merge into John Gorton (abt.1640-1714)

John Gorton (-aft.1762) is an excess John Gorton and should be removed

John Gorton (bef.1722-aft.1742) merge into John Gorton (abt.1675-aft.1750)

William Gorton (bef.1742-aft.1782) merge into William Gorton I (abt.1706-1761)

John Gorton (bef.1762-aft.1802) merge into John Gorton (1742-1819)

Job Gorton (bef.1782-aft.1822) merge into Job Gorton (1776-1854)

Sara (Emerson) Gorton (bef.1782-aft.1819) merge into Sarah (Emerson) Gorton (1781-1853)

Hi Nancy, you might want to edit your question and tag the Puritan Great Migration Project.  They manage one of the profiles, and might be able to get the ball rolling faster.

Edit: Never mind, I just saw you did, lol
Some other helpful soul added the tag, but thanks for the tip!

Nancy, I don't have the expertise to check your work on these early profiles, as you requested, but the way you stated the merges doesn't always have them going the right way.

We have a policy about merges - when the LNAB (Last Name At Birth) is identical on both profiles then the higher number is to be merged into the lower number.  See my comments in red and blue on the way you stated the merges (please note I am not verifying that these merges are correct to do, only that IF they are done, the direction needs to be as I'm stating):

 • Samuel Gorton (-bef.1732) merged into Samuel Gorton Sr. (bef.1593-bef.1677)  correct direction
 • John Gorton (-aft.1752) merge into John Gorton (abt.1640-1714) should be Gorton-946 into Gorton-792
 • John Gorton (-aft.1762) is an excess John Gorton and should be removed  we don't delete profiles - instead, we merge them away.  You can merge Gorton-791 into Gorton-383 if you're really sure it needs to go away.
 • John Gorton (bef.1722-aft.1742) merge into John Gorton (abt.1675-aft.1750)  correct direction
 • William Gorton (bef.1742-aft.1782) merge into William Gorton I (abt.1706-1761)  correct direction
 • John Gorton (bef.1762-aft.1802) merge into John Gorton (1742-1819) should be Gorton-1037 into Gorton-788
 • Job Gorton (bef.1782-aft.1822) merge into Job Gorton (1776-1854) should be Gorton-1036 into Gorton-787
 • Sara (Emerson) Gorton (bef.1782-aft.1819) merge into Sarah (Emerson) Gorton (1781-1853)  should be Emerson-2778 into Emerson-2148

Thanks Gaile, point taken.
Gaile, WT is now clever enough to force the merge to the lower-numbered profile. Even if the merge is proposed in the opposite direction, if the LNAB is the same on both, it will require a merge to the lower numbered ID. (This wasn't always the case, so you have a good memory :D )
