I'm looking for more information on Martin McNamara b 1834, Cork, Ireland.

He came over to South Africa in the late 1850'ssettling in Port Elizabeth.

I'd like to be able to find out about his parents and siblings.

Did Martin have a middle name or Initial. Do you have his death record and where.

There are 2 born 1834 Cork Ireland but both died there.

Do you have his immigration records?"?

Thanks Wayne, for responding.

unfortunately we do not know if he had a middle name. The information we have on him comes from church records in Port Elizabeth. It is possible that Cork is listed incorrectly however on the South African settlers list it simply says Ireland. His wife Catherine Moroney says Clare. (County Clare?) So it's possible Cork is wrong for Martin. According to family stories though they only met in Liverpool before boarding the boat to South Africa. We're not sure whether their bans were done in Liverpool or only once they arrived this side and passenger lists are only readily available for 1820 settlers. Not sure we'll ever find out more.

Hi Wayne,

thanks. Martin William is Martin's son. We have a photo of that grave as Nigel was my grandfathers cousin. Nigel is not a Mc Namara. He is a Cooney and was missing presumed dead in WWII. They found his whole crews mass grave only after the war and buried them in Austria. I have a baptism record as well as a census and the grave photo for this Martin. I know there was a Bridget on the settlers list however the list doesn't list siblings so couldn't confirm. Do you have any confirmation on her being his sister? Martin and Catherine had 12 children

Patrick 1861-1919 Martin William 1863-1902 Mary 1865 john 1867 Michael 1869-1930 William 1870-1874/5 James 1871 Augusta 1872 Kate 1874 William 1875-1877 Joseph 1877-1879 Joseph 1879. They seemed to like family names. The second Joseph was born 2 days after the elder Joseph died

Catholic Church, Port Elizabeth. Some writing blurry.

Thanks Wayne. According to the church it was a 7 that was corrected to a 9. Therefore  the correct date is the 9th of Septdmber. The church also had 2 census records which they sent us

There is a 1841, 1851 Census  Transcription.

Noted as Gilroe, which more likely Gilroy,Cork,Unfortunate but part of record is

destroyed, Birth years and age not readable.

His Siblings, Marie or Minnie,Patrick Michael, Nora, Bridget (one i asked about,)

Father Michael McNamara, Mother Anne Ford. If you join IE Ireland you may find

more info. I did have it ,but so many records were destroyed by Ireland during WW1

to recover paper, and make paper pulp, very few records survived.I beleive

you could join for a 7 day trial period.
