Can you link the parents of any illegitimate child without the parents being listed as spouses

Yes.  Just add them separately to the child.  Make sure they do not get linked as spouses (although this can be undone if it happens accidentally).

Be sure to explain in the separate biographies why they are not spouses.
The linking of parents occurs frequently when the 2nd parent ID is entered at the top of the page and the GO button is selected. You should always scroll to the bottom of the page 'without' hitting that button. You would find a checkbox defaulted to indicate they are married. Uncheck that box 'before' adding 2nd parent and the 'marriage' record won't be created.

After adding the first parent then when adding the second parent uncheck the question near the bottom that ask if the first parent was the spouse.

It has a check already because most of the time it is the spouse.
