(1) Shall we update Joanna's LNAB to Collins or Collens, or not?

(2) Might we be able to locate English records that would improve upon Joanna's identify?

In his 2019 article in The American Genealogist about the ancestry of Robert Tuck, author Clifford Stott called her Joan Collins. Her birth and parentage are not known.

His finding is based on a "key piece of the puzzle"--the 22 May 1639 will of widow Ellen Collens of "the p[ar]ishe of St. John of Berestreet in the city of Norwich." The will includes a bequest to "my kinsman Roberte Tucke the sonne of Robt Tucke now or late of New England," to be paid when he reaches 24 years.

Based on this record, Stott then located a Norwich marriage at St. Stephen, 24 January 1618/9," for Robert Tooke and Jone Collens. Also located in that parish register was the baptism of their son Robert, 31 October 1619.

In the article, Stott identifies our immigrant/PGM as Robert^1 Tuck (Robert^A, Robert^B, John^C), baptized All Saints, Norwich, 19 October 1596.

Clifford L. Stott, "The English Ancestry of Robert^1 Tuck of Hampton, New Hampshire," The American Genealogist, 91 (2019):10-22, citing

1. As to the will of widow Ellen Collens, Consistency Court of Norwich, reg. wills, 131:2:191 [FHL film #166875].

2. As to the Tooke-Collens 1618/9 marriage and 1619 baptism of son Robert, St. Stephen, Norwich, parish register [FHL film #1471578]. The author notes, "St. Stephen was one of twenty-nine parishes in the city of Norwich with registers predating this marriage."

3. As to the immigrant's baptism, All Saints, Norwich, parish register [FHL film #993667].

Was her baptism listed in the Parish records, and as which name spelling? Or perhaps you were referring to the baptism of her spouse being found in those records...?

Hi Sharon,

As yet, we don't have a birth/baptism record for her, and her parentage is unknown.

She's reported the mother of children born 1619-1628/9.

Now, based on his baptism, Robert would have been about 23 at the time they were married--ala, there is a high probability this was a first marriage for both.

See Lois' comment below. My initial thought was to update the LNAB to Collins, but, like Lois, when I saw there were two references to the spelling Collens, it seemed a G2G was in order.

Would sure help if we had a baptismal record.

It is curious that Stott chose to go with Collins. Perhaps because it is more common. However, I'd go with Collens, based on the two records that show that name.

If there are 2 sources and they both say "Collens" that's what I'd use.

Thank you, Lois.

My initial thought was to update her LNAB to Collins, but, like you, when I saw the two variants given as Collens, decided a G2G was the way to go.

Thank you so much for collaborating. --Gene

Wonderful news. TYTY. --Gene

Separately, I did find Robert's 1596 baptismal entry in the All Saints register, but wasn't so lucky when I checked for the marriage record at St. Stephen. May post a separate G2G regarding those parish registers.
I’ve been trying, unsuccessfully so far to find a Tuck Will. Will look a bit more.

TYTY Ann.

After work, will work to create a FSP and post a more complete set of the English records referenced in the article. --Gene

Yeah! I found the marriage record, Tooke-Collens 1618[/9] marriage, St. Stephen Parish register transcripts; digital images, FHL film 993969, Digital Collection (DGS) 7908002, image 154 of 656.

I have this as 24 January 1618[/9], "Robbt Tooke & Jone Collens"

What do you think? --Gene

I posted that on his profile a couple of days ago!

I found it on FMP.

Ann
Thanks, Ann.
I’d checked the image and it does say Tooke so started a new search for a Tooke will just in case
