I wanted to share this family photo of The Jasper Train - 1864 on the Oregon Trail with the community. Date: 30 Sep 2022.
Click here for the image details page or here for the full-sized version (770 x 541). If you count the horns, you can see this is a six-oxen team, double yoked. The yokes you see are called 'slider yokes' because the ox, with their posture, can adjust the yoke to help them either push, or pull, a load. Use the link on The Jasper Train page that takes you to the pdf by Dixon Ford and Lee Kreutzer. They answer questions you never thought to ask about the Oregon Trail and why so many oxen died. I love this picture because it shows the power of these extraordinary, intelligent animals.
