Check out

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Special:Following

This will tell you what tags you are following.

You can use that same page to add other tags or delete tags you no longer wish to follow.

I have the tag for Washington State and I am thinking that THAT is what is bringing up these Sirnames.  How would that get corrected?
Remove the tag; see what happens.
Tammie, you are following the G2G tag, which will give you G2G updates any time somebody posts about this forum. Also, the AMERICAN_REVOLUTIONARY_WAR tag that you follow will give you updates whenever somebody uses that tag for their ancestor who served in that war.

Some of the other tags you follow will not give you any "hits."  If you want to see results for people named Schauer, Estep, Joiner, and Joyner, enter each one of those surnames as a separate item on the Special:Following page. (Do not connect a name with other names or words.)

Can you provide more Information?

Do you have names that you are following? If so you will get updates for people with those names, even if you have no obvious connections or family members that are mentioned in the update list.

As I have family members with the name Burns, and I follow that name they are included in my family activity feed even though they have no connections to my Burns relatives.

Most of the names are Washington (or connect to it) and are under the US Black History Project, neither of which I am following.

http://22:38: Katie (Cooper) Bryant edited the marriage between Donald Grant (1886-aft.1934) and Gertrude (Washington) Grant (abt.1885-aft.1934). [Thank Katie for this]

Hopefully someone can figure this out for me.

Tammie, have a look at the box on your profile under DNA tested and Following. It shows that you are in fact following  WASHINGTON  . Click the [edit] link there to get rid of it.

Is that a sub-project of the United States Project? Since you're a member of that. (Edit -- Oh, just answered, nvm.)
Yes, sub project for people helping with Washington State.
The problem is that the tag does not distinguish between the name of the State and the surname. There is no way to follow one without the other.
A way around it would be for the Washington project to use the tag Washington_Project or Washington_State (with the underscore). Perhaps you could suggest that to the project leaders.
