Seeking Sir Thomas Millington entry in "online Oxford DNB."

From W. David Samulsen and others in "Lady Ann Millington question," threaded Gen-Medieval message board posting, October 22, 2012; web content, GoogleGroups

Jan Wolfe writes,

From the online Oxford DNB:

"Millington, Sir Thomas (1628–1704), physician, was born at Newbury, Berkshire, son of Thomas Millington. He was educated ... at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he was admitted as pensioner on 31 May 1645 ... and took his BA in 1649."

and

"Millington was knighted on 6 March 1680. Shortly before, on 23 February, he had been licensed to marry Anne Hannah King, daughter of Sir William Russell of Worcestershire, and widow of Major John King; the couple had two children, Thomas and Anne."

Hoping someone might assist by confirming the above and any other genealogical information given in the DNB entry about Sir Thomas Millington.

Thank you in advance for any assistance you are able to provide. --Gene

ODNB link (subscription site but free with many UK library cards)

https://doi.org/10.1093/ref:odnb/18764

Much of the info cited in the question comes originally  from Venn;  Alumni Cantabrigiensis at https://venn.lib.cam.ac.uk/Documents/acad/2018/search-2018.html (search for Thomas Millington, the first result)

Will https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D670697 (its also on Ancestry but you need to use  24 Jan 1703 as probate date as they transcibe as written)

Marriage London Metropolitan Archives; London, England; London Church of England Parish Registers; Reference Number: P69/Ste1/A/002/Ms04449/002 St Stephan, Coleman Street register 1636-1717 https://www.ancestry.co.uk/sharing/20221?token=la5zhFNLm8qc3Upry7Vqz5zZevVFun6sezTMjxDWgPI%3D  (top right hand page; misstranscribed as Willington) Anne was a widow.

Hi Helen,

Thank you. All of the references you provided are helpful.

I'm particularly interested in correctly identifying his wife's  first husband (Wikipedia calls him Henry King; but the soc.gen post called him Major John King. Alumni Catabrigiensis calls her "Anne Hannah King, widow," but is silent as to her King husband.

While it is only a referenced item, entry below may for now be sufficient to confirm he was John King. Roughly,

Attested copy of conveyance (feoffment), RAPER/245, In consideration of £480, from Sir Thomas Millington of Lincolns Inn Fields, co. Middx., kt., and Ann Hanna, his now wife (formerly wife of John King, dec'd), to Thomas Miller, citizen and alderman of Chichester, 23 Nov 1687; Property as in no. 244 but described in different terms; held by West Sussex Record Office; see The National Archives.

Edited to add: Alumni Catabrigiensis also does not identify her as the daughter of Sir William Russell. His daughter Ann is "wife of Sir Thomas Millington of London, M.D." in "Russell of Strensham"; see Thomas May, Gregory King and Henry Dethrick The visitation of the county of Worcester ... begun 1682 ... finished ... 1683 ..., 84; digital images, InternetArchive.

(note my spelling mistake Cantabrigiensis)

A more accessible secondary source for Anne Hannah is the HOP article on son Thomas Millington

https://www.historyofparliamentonline.org/volume/1690-1715/member/millington-thomas-1680-1714

This  book on Henry King DD produces some evidence that  Anne Hannah was widow of John King and daughter of William Russell

Rev. J Hannah, biographical notes in  ''Poets and Psalms by Henry King DD '' (Oxford and London 1843)

Page 96 see text and footnotes   https://archive.org/details/PoemsAndPsalms/page/n95/mode/2up?view=theater&q=1670

 Appendix C

Abstract  will of John King (1570);wife Anne Hannah sole executrix,  plus notes on will

https://archive.org/details/PoemsAndPsalms/page/n135/mode/2up?view=theater&q=1670

One note links Anne Hannah to Thomas Millington, to Sir Francis Russell of Strensham (son of sir William) and to  property  in Chichester (property in Chancery lane left to Anne Hannah in will) .The second cites  a dedication above an alms house in Worminghall linking  Anne Hannah King to her father William Russell. John King left money in his will for the endowment of this almshouse

And the incscription still exists (so I think we have proof smileyhttps://worminghallvillage.co.uk/?page_id=23

Note:  In the will of Thomas Millington (1704), Sir Francis Russell of Strensham was appointed a trustee during the minority of Thomas's son, Thomas.

Ta da! Thank you, Helen the Great!

Yes ... we have the links to parents, etc.

TYTYT. Just perfect! --Gene
