"[S]everal royal marriages were proposed for him, but he eventually never married" according to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Hamilton%2C_3rd_Earl_of_Arran

He currently has two wives on WikiTree, including Margaret Seton, also married to his brother Claud.

Both Scots Peerage Vol. iv, p. 368-9 and an old but very informative version of the Dictionary of National Biography Vol. 24:173-176 discuss his marriage proposals, but do not show any actual marriages for him before his mind left.

Thanks, Bobbie. It looks like both marriages resulted from conflation of two Hamiltons - one supposed wife was actually married to a different James Hamilton, third cousin of the 3rd Earl of Arran; the other supposed wife was actually married to Claud Hamilton, brother of the 3rd Earl of Arran. I have deleted the marriages and added research notes to all those involved.
