If anyone is up to a bit of a mystery, check out George GLEGG [Glegg-43], Christen ROBERTSON [Robertson-24073], and Christian GLEGG [Glegg-60].  If anyone can elaborate on their relationship to one another please let me know. Are my Research Notes totally off the mark?

I searched for George 1790 - 1810 and found the following

  • Born 1804 in Aberdeen (searching with Geo, Geo*, George, or Gleg* all showed the same one source).  Church of Scotland Registers
    • George, son of George Glegg & Margt Meston, was born or baptized on 5 May 1804 in Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.<ref>"Church of Scotland: Old Parish Registers - Births and Baptisms," database, National Records of Scotland, ([https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/ ScotlandsPeople] : accessed 18 August 2022), George Glegg born or baptised on 5 May 1804, son of George Glegg & Margt Meston, in Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Scotland; citing Parish Number 168/A , Ref 100 170.</ref>
  • Marriage with Christian 1821 in Aberdeen (actually found 2 different References for same date in Aberdeen, you have the 1st one in the profile).  Church of Scotland Registers
    • George married Christian Robertson on or after 15 February 1821 in Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.<ref>"Church of Scotland: Old Parish Registers - Banns and Marriages," database, National Records of Scotland, ([https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/ ScotlandsPeople] : accessed 18 August 2022), George Glegg marriage to Christian Robertson on or after 15 Feb 1821 in Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Scotland; citing Parish Number 168/A , Ref 330 177, Frame 8521.</ref><ref>"Church of Scotland: Old Parish Registers - Banns and Marriages," database, National Records of Scotland, ([https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/ ScotlandsPeople] : accessed 18 August 2022), George Glegg marriage to Christian Robertson on or after 15 Feb 1821 in Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Scotland; citing Parish Number 168/A , Ref 330 14, Frame 8432.</ref>
  • Death 1856 in St Nicholas.  Mother's maiden name was Meston (matches the Birth Source)  Statutory Registers (after 1855 need to search)
    • George's death (age 52) was registered in 1856 in the St Nicholas district. Mother's maiden name Meston<ref>"Statutory Register of Deaths," database, National Records of Scotland, ([https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/ ScotlandsPeople] : accessed 18 August 2022), George Glegg death registered 1856 in St Nicholas (age 52, mother's maiden name Meston); citing Ref 168/1 1004.</ref>
  • Children - searched with Gleg*, no 1st name, 1820 - 1860, Parents George and Christian found the following:
    • Mary, baptized on 4 April 1826 in Aberdeen
    • Robert, baptized on 29 April 1828  in Aberdeen.  His mother is listed as Christian Robinson, not Glegg or Robertson!
  • The only Christian 'Glegg' that I found was born 26 Mar 1820 in Fetteresso.  Parents were Alexander and Christian.

  • Census
    • 1841 in Aberdeen <ref> "Scotland Census, 1841," database, National Records of Scotland, ([https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/ ScotlandsPeople] : accessed 18 August 2022), Robert Glegg (10) in Aberdeen registration district in Aberdeenshire, Scotland; citing Ref 168/A 50/ 3.</ref>
    • Christian, age 20, Mary, age 15, Robert, age 10.  Age for Mary matches, but not Robert

Since George didn't die until 1856, I suspect they were not in Scotland, didn't get counted, or records are not online. It is possible that the Birth and Death above are not the same George that married Christian, also. Possibly the marriage source has parents listed.

Thanks Susan
Thanks once again Linda. I guess I will just have to live with what I have. I believe that in the 1841 census, generally only children under ten had their specific age recorded. Otherwise the age was recorded to the nearest factor of five below. Thus I wondered if the age of 20 could have been a typo, ie it should have been 40. Thus if their mother Christian had given her age as 44, that would have fit with her year of birth.  It had just seemed strange to me that if their mother were still alive that she wasn’t enumerated with the 2 younger children. Anyway, case closed.
15.  Children up to the age of 15 were supposed to have their age recorded.  Anyone above that age supposedly had theirs rounded down to the nearest 5.  This did not always happen, as I have recorded instances of children between 6 and 10 being rounded down to 5, and reverse instances of those over 15 being rounded UP.

It seems to have very much depended on how the person recording the data interpreted the instructions.

Hi Bob,

Not enough info for me to determine the mother/daughter issue you have.  The link only lists 3 people...

Just a note on your searches:  You write many times, entries such as "has 0 hits in all Scotland, using Gleg*, beginning with Chris"

I note that Chris does not have a wildcard as does Gleg*.  I would suggest shortening the entry Chris, as most would abbreviate it as Chr, or at least that is what I have seen many times...

Good hunting,

Rick

Thanks for your attention.  I will try when searching for a female Christian, Christina or Cristen to use beginning with Chr father than Chris.
