Hi Everyone,

I'm working on a branch of a tree which I can not find how they got to Australia!

I've tried Ancestry and the tried the Australian National Archives, no luck. I'm not sure if I am missing something trying to find them. Details I do have them in the 1881 census in Ventnor, Hampshire, so it has to be after that date.

George and Sarah Field both born in Portsea, Hampshire in between 1815-1820. and several of their children.

Mary Elizabeth Field (1840-1905)

Lucy Ann Field (1843 - 1900)

Alfred Lawrence Field (1852-1919)

Albert Ebenezer Field (1854-1937)

Grace Emily Wilson nee Field (1856-1900)

Louis Herbert Field (1858-1929)

My notes mention a ship called the "Patriach" in 1884 but I haven't had any luck finding it either

any help is appreciated

Hi Elayine. Have a look at this link:

http://marinersandships.com.au/1884/07/060pat.htm

The Patriarch reached Sydney on 12 July 1884 carrying among others George, Sarah and Mary Field, plus some other Fields whose first names don't match so well.

George died 14th March 1894, so any ship after that is out.

He was also recorded in the 1881 census, supposedly taken on or after the 3rd April 1881.

Emigration / immigration would need to be between the middle of March 1881, and the end of March-beginning of April 1894.   Not a huge window, but I'm coming up blank.

More blanks. I expect that most records only show passengers.

I suspect that I have a relative that arrived as a member of a ship crew and left service in Adelaide.

Here is the 1881 census record that Elayine and Melanie mentioned. It lists George's occupation as "draper", reasonably consistent with "merchant" on the Patriarch 1884 shipping list.

Often I can find the older children listed separately on different pages, (single males, single females), but all I have is that same very short list on Jim's link.  (And the handwriting is atrocious!)
Thank you. this really helps
