The only two pieces of information I have about her mother are that she was born in England (1880 census, 1900 census, and Mary's death certificate) and that her maiden name may have been Roley (Mary's death certificate). I would like to find some other source and information for her mother. Or if you can suggest any next steps it would be greatly appreciated.
The name Ellen is not supported. I found an Ellen Rowley several years ago that I thought was the mother but she was not.
Mary Malone was born in Louisville, Kentucky in 1845. She seems to have been abandoned by her family at an early age. The first record I can find of her is the 1860 census where she is a servant.
There was mention in family lore that she was abandoned by her father and that she had famly in Cincinnati who would not help. The family may have been resistant to helping because they were Catholic and Mary joing the Methodiist Episcopal Church. The validity of this is in question.
After years of research, I found newspaper articles in Lawrence county, Illinois and Crawford county, Indiana which mentioned that Mary's children were being visited by their aunt Katie M. Roberts. Further investigation revealed that her maiden name was Malone. The age difference between Katie and Mary is 14 to 16 years. Katie also had her mother's origin listed as Ireland, while Mary always listed her mother's origin as England. Because of this I believe they are half-sisters.
I have used the following online resources: FamilySearch, Ancestry, MyHeritage, Newspapers.com, NewspaperArchives.com.
I have traveled to Louisville and visited the Filson and The University of Kentucky orphanage collections and did not find anything. Catholic Charities also kindly searched the records for St. Vincent Catholic Girls Orphanage.
