Unable to adopt a profile with no Profile Manager

Someone created some profiles then realised it was not their family tree.  I suggested they remove themselves as Profile Manager and I would take over and adopt these profiles.  They have removed themselves and the profiles now show No Profile Manager and the privacy is set as Open.  When I try to adopt the profile it comes up with message "This profile already has a manager so it cannot be adopted."

Does it take some time for the system to recognise there is no Manager?

Same thing when attempting to adopt the spouse.
I have confirmed this error too, Ian. To attract the right attention, you could edit your G2G question and add the word

bugs

in the Surnames/Tags field.
Whatever the problem, it now seems to be resolved this morning, as I can now adopt these profiles.  Seems likely the previous Profile Manager mistakenly removed himself from all profiles or possibly closed their account.  See Linda Peterson's comment.

Thanks for all the helpful suggestions

I have had this happen previously when the person that was the PM 'removed their email' to close their account.  When that is done, without contacting Admin about closing their account or following one of the procedures, it causes problems to many / all profiles that they were PM of when they removed their email address.

Admin had to do 'something' to allow the profiles to be adopted.

I just checked the PM's contributions.  It shows they edited the email and the comment is 'Crerar-13 closed the account of Crerar-135'

Unfortunately, that does not actually close the account correctly and Admin has to do something to completely orphan the profiles.
It would be helpful if the software detected this situation (which it must be able to do, because the inconsistency between "No Profile Manager" in one place and "has a manager" in the other should be visible internally). Instead of the message "This profile already has a manager so it cannot be adopted", it could say something like "This profile requires administrative action before it can be adopted: please email [address] to report." Even better, it could generate the report automatically.
