Hi everyone!

500px-Meet_our_Members_Photos-64.jpgIt's time to get to know another one of our wonderful WikiTreers. This week's member is Kate Schmidt

Kate became a Wiki Genealogist in December of 2017. She is a team leader in our US Black Heritage project.

When and how did you get interested in genealogy or family history?

I was about 24 when one of my aunts asked me if I’d like to have her father’s WWII Army trunk which was full of photos and papers. Being naturally curious, I accepted, and the trunk turned out to be crammed with photo albums and documents that had belonged to his mother, my great-grandmother Celia (Whyatt) Saddler. I didn’t know much of anything concrete about my family, so I took the albums to my grandmother’s house and she helped me label everything she knew (this was her husband’s family) then she pulled out HER mother’s family albums…and I was hooked.

What are some of your interests outside of genealogy?

My husband and I have a house in Maine (it has us, actually,) that was built about 1780, and most of our time is spent trying to rescue the house from dreadful 20th-century “improvements.” I also love cooking, gardening, knitting, and smashing the patriarchy. And I love our cats, who also have us.

What is your genealogical research focus?

Before I stumbled across WikiTree, I mostly worked on whatever branch of my tree interested me the most. Just before I joined here, I got my dad’s DNA results back and within a day I had identified his biological father. That kept me pretty busy for a while! These days, I spend the vast majority of my time working with the US Black Heritage Project. My own branch has been woefully neglected since I got involved in this group.

Are you are interested in certain surnames or locations?

I’m involved in a Weathers/Withers study centered around Stephen Weathers of Georgia and his elusive wife Nancy. Those names are always interesting, as are the Saddlers and Wentzells and Whyatts in England.

Do you have a favorite ancestor?

If I could meet any ancestor, it would have to be my great-great grandfather Harry James Wentzell Saddler. I have SO MANY questions to ask, like why did you leave your wife and children in England and come to America and start a new family, and what did you do when you got here? And is that story about your father dying in a submarine accident really true? I think he would have a lot of tales to tell, most of them probably tall. Also, I’m descended from at least half a dozen Filles du Roi. I would love to talk to any of them and find out why they chose that strange life.

Do you have a favorite genealogical discovery?

Finding my dad’s biological father was pretty darned thrilling. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I’d wind up being descended from the young man who fell off the Mayflower and survived!

What is your toughest brick wall currently?

Oh, boy. Do you want the whole list or just the top ten? First I’d have to say is the wife of the aforementioned Stephen Withers. A LOT of people would be really happy if we found her.

For me, I despair of ever finding out about my third great-grandmother Fanny (McGuire) Scott, an Irish-born shawl fringer living in Glasgow. She bore my second great-grandmother, Isabella (Scott) Whyatt a few years after her husband had died, but gave her his surname. Who were Fannie’s parents? Who was Belle’s father? I have a bunch of brick walls (honestly, a lot of my mother’s paternal side is mysterious,) but this is the wall I’d most love to break down.

How long have you been on WikiTree?

I’ve been on WikiTree since December 2017. I genuinely don’t remember how I stumbled upon this place (probably via my cousin Ginny Winslett), but when I realized what it did and what it meant, I was like the cartoon wolf with the “AROOGA” eyes. This is what I’ve always wanted to work on. If only back then I hadn’t uploaded *quite* so much GEDCOM. I’m going to be finding bits of that to clean up until I die.

Which project or projects are you most involved in?

About a year ago, I got involved with the US Black Heritage Project. It’s such an amazingly important and worthwhile project. So many Black Americans have been told that researching their roots is impossible. That’s just not the case. Yes, there are unique challenges to Black genealogy, and there frequently are unbreakable walls, but it doesn’t mean these stories shouldn’t be sought out. Everyone deserves to know where they came from.

I’m a Team Leader on the Notables project for US Black Heritage. Most of my day is spent on that. It’s important to have great profiles for all of our Notables. Our profiles show up when you do a Google search for a famous person, so it’s crucial that these profiles look as good as possible. Right now we’re conducting a big push to identify new Notables and to ask Profile Managers of existing profiles to add us as co-manager. (If I’ve sent you a message about this, hey there! Can you add us? We’re nice!) Currently, we manage or co-manage over 2000 profiles, but we always want more!

I also work on the African-American Cemeteries team. My task right now is adding African-American cemeteries in Louisiana. Louisiana fascinates me, even though I don't have a direct genealogical connection, just a tangential one with the Acadians.

When I’m not working on those things, I just try to attack unconnected branches. Three of the biggest unconnected branches on WikiTree are Black families. It would be SO great to get them connected.

How can others help the US Black Heritage Project?

LOL. We need volunteers EVERYWHERE. There is so much work to be done, and we have lots of really cool teams. If you’re looking for some really meaningful work, please sign up. It’s super rewarding and we’re a fun team to work with.

If you’re not up for formally becoming part of our team, the most helpful thing you can do is to always add the {{African-American Sticker}} under the Biography line in a profile when you create or find a profile for a Black American. This helps us out in so many ways.

What inspires you to contribute so much of yourself to WikiTree's mission?

Black people in America have historically been excluded from all aspects of life, including genealogy. Helping people to find ancestors and stories they never thought they could find is indescribably important to me. Connecting even one living person to their enslaved ancestor is worth all the effort.

What is your favorite feature or function on WikiTree?

I feel like I learn something new every day. A few months ago, our fearless leader Emma MacBeath mentioned something called the Category Picker, which I’d never noticed. What a game-changer. Finding categories on WikiTree can be challenging, as we all know. This makes it so incredibly easy to find what you’re looking for.

The other feature I can’t live without is the little orange puzzle piece on the top of unconnected profiles. If you can’t see that on your unconnected profiles, join the Connectors Project, pronto. It’s so worth it.

What feature or function would you most like to see added or improved?

It really would be great if it was easier to find categories and pages. Sometimes I just give up and Google what I want. I’d love a search function that is for everything BUT individual profiles. (I bet someone’s going to tell me that this exists already.)

Do you have a story about how someone was helped through your participation on WikiTree?

Nothing spectacular, but I want to shout out the amazing USBH team again. These folks are SO helpful, collaborative and good-humored. If any of us need help, we just post on the Discord and someone always jumps right in to lend a hand.

Do you have any tips for someone who wants to get more involved in our community?

If you’re just starting out, it’s okay to feel overwhelmed. We were all new here once. There is a learning curve, so just go slow and steady. Use the tutorials. Ask for help. I’m not kidding when I say that I learn almost weekly about some existing functionality that I didn’t know about. And find a project! I’ve gotten so much more out of WikiTree since I joined up with USBH and became part of the awesome little community there.

What could we do to inspire more people to participate in our mission?

We have a great social media team. I would like to encourage more of our members to engage on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. The more clicks and likes and comments they get, the more people see them!

Hi Kate,

Great interview! Thank you for all your contributions to our project, especially in USBH. Emma has done amazing work, perhaps most importantly in encouraging and inspiring members like you to join her.

By the way, we do have a help page search engine and some text search options that utilize Google.

Congratulations on being nominated as member of the week, Kate.

Looking at your last name, I would say that your husband has German ancestors. If you need help there, don't be afraid to ask, even though Schmidt is one of the most common German names.
by Dieter Lewerenz G2G Astronaut (3.1m points)
Thank you! My husband definitely has German ancestors. I've only gotten back to the very late 1700s with that line. If you'd like to check it out, here's his dad: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Schmidt-8753
I will go tomorrow for 5 days to Berlin. Next week I will have a look. I made one change on Jef Nessen Schmidt (Schmidt-8798):
1853 Hadersleben belonged to the Herzogtum Schleswig, which belonged to the Kingdom of Denmark. It came to Germany (Prussian Province Schleswig-Holstein) in 1866 after the German-Danish war.

Thanks!! Have fun in Berlin!

Hi Kate, thanks for a very fine interview. Well done, you on the USBH project! Your descent from the Filles du Roi is very interesting. I was working on my ex-husband's ancestry and he is also a descendant (of say 4 to 5 daughters) on his maternal side. We also have a connection. You and I are 9th cousins 1x removed through MRCA Martha (Fosdick) Holden!

Wow, Kate, there's a whole lot going on in your life!  Loved the interview and great to get to know you.

Especially enjoyed how your cats don't belong to you but the other way around.  Totally agree.

BTW, we are 10th cousins through https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Soole-10 Sarah (Soole) Hinckley.

"I’m going to be finding bits of that to clean up until I die." I had to laugh about this because I too uploaded a gedcom in October 2016 which I started cleaning up this year, one profile at a time. I'm on like only page 7 of over 1000 pages of my profiles!

Thanks for everything you do for USBH Kate. You and Katie (co-team leader for our notables) have done such an amazing amount of clean up over the last year. I'm very proud of our notable profiles and they only keep getting better.

by Emma MacBeath G2G Astronaut (1.3m points)
LOLZ. I actually shamed myself into cleaning up a bunch of my own profiles yesterday after I realized people were visiting my profile!

It's a great pleasure to work with you, too. I couldn't ask for a better team leader! Now if we could only clone you...
We need to clone both of you!  Or should I just say: "Dittos!"

Great interview Kate. I completely understand how 'the cats have us.' I discovered many years ago that our dog has us well trained. I learn some new part of wikitree almost every time I sign on. In fact, many of the new gems I discover are by accident. Thank You for my nugget of the day; new member how to. Gedcom clean-up is a magor problem in my tree to. At least I won't ever run out of things on my to-do list. Thank You for giving me so much insight to my 9th cousin once removed.
