How to Compare Y-DNA

My brother has taken a Y-DNA test and his top matches have the surname Carroll. We have traced our connection back to a John Carroll, who we believe either lived in or visited North Carolina in about 1765. We are trying to determine which John Carroll. How can I compare my brother's Y-DNA to another Carroll descendant?

Hello Debra,

If you have not done so already, join your brother to the Carroll Surname DNA Project at Family Tree DNA.

Encourage his matches there to add their ancestry to WikiTree and their Y-DNA to mitoYDNA.org.  This video shows how to use WikiTree to compare Y-DNA: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WB_Qn5sOmxY&feature=youtu.be
