I’m curious as the leads on ancestry seem to show potential father as a Reverend Matthew Lewis born abt. 1775 in Rhode Island.

Is there any further source or gravestone etc for this Reverend? Such as a spouse etc and did he end up in New York State in the area of Jefferson county?

Thank you

I see Diana is mentioned and her daughter no husband he must of passed prior to 1855?

I see the Lewis name here in Wikitree’s  First Families of Westerly, Rhode Island I’m almost certain they tie into this group.

The census is showing 3 generations the father daughter and granddaughter.

I figured he was a Methodist my civil war grandfather was also Matthew’s granddaughter was his second wife late in life they shared common faith! Interesting this Rhode Island is also mentioned with my 5th gg Jeremiah Gibbs as his birth place in a census. Ironic
They followed exactly the same route as my Coon ancestors did - Rhode Island to Herkimer County to Jefferson County.

Possibly him in the 1820 Census of Jefferson County?

And 1830 and 1840?

P.S. Here's a query about a Caleb Lewis, who settled in Jefferson County, New York ca. 1820 and may have had a brother Matthew:

The migration pattern is interesting definitely of historic value I am sure it was a pattern of many for whatever reason of the times they lived. You think about it in a time where transportation was horse and wagon no paved roads and forests fields that is a heck of a journey! What an adventure! laugh

Is this Mathew?  1800 Census in Warren, Herkimer, NY.

I noticed him while looking for my ancestor Margaret Lewis who was born at Warren in the 1790s.  I believe her father to be Benjamin Lewis...who happened to have a son named Matthew that would live his life as a pastor out west.  Benjamin himself became a Deacon at some point.

Somehow the name Greene became a popular middle name in the Benjamin Lewis family.  Why?  Could Mathew and Benjamin of Warren have a connection?  Mathew's possible parents are Mathew Lewis(b1739) and Susannah Phillips(b1745) and married in W Greenwich, Kent, RI.  This Mathew's father was Amos Lewis of Westerley, RI married to Eleanor Greene.  As in Benjamin Greene Lewis!!

Too much of a reach?  Lol
