Join the May 2015 Cemetery Connection Challenge!

The Global Cemeteries Project creates a huge number of high-quality, sourced profiles. However, a lot of them aren't connected to any family members, so they aren't yet part of the global tree. So the May 2015 Cemetery Connection Challenge will focus on getting those profiles connected.

For the May challenge, you can earn points for any of the project activities that make immediate, concrete contributions to the tree. So that means that there are no points this time for taking photos or doing transcriptions, but there are points for creating profiles (including adding family members!), adding photos to profiles, and connecting them to the tree. And connecting profiles to the tree is worth a big bonus.

If you'd like to join, just edit the Participants section of the challenge page and add a section for yourself. (You can copy and paste an existing section and just change the name to yours.)

Post here if you have any questions and I'll do my best to answer to them!

That's right! So connecting a family cemetery to the global tree could really be a jackpot of points. :)
What if Cemeteries you have photographs of are not even listed? I have photos of multiple cemeteries in Bossier and Webster Parishes of Louisiana, and not a single cemetery in my records is listed. How do I set up a Cemetery?
I read that before I asked my question. It did not provide enough information for me to feel comfortable adding cemeteries and working on the project. Is there more information somewhere, or someone I can email with?
Jessica,

You can send me a private message at http://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Atkinson-3464&public=1.   I'll be happy to help you get started. It can be a bit overwhelming.
I have started clicking on the connection first, then if the parents are connected, I know the child will be too.
Carolyn, if you want help creating cemeteries, let me know and I can create them for you if you would like. I just need the basic information (name of cemetery, location, etc.) and I can set you up. Note that the creation of cemeteries is not a part of this particular challenge, but it is helpful to have them established so that you can fully populate them later. Send me a message if you haven't got help to get this process going already.
Scott

I was offering help. I have already created three.  It's Jessica Morgan who is asking for help.  See a few messages above this.

D'OH!

That's what I get for posting and not looking... almost as bad as texting and driving...

Thanks! That's what I like from a collaborative effort - glad to see the system works. I appreciate your help, Carolyn! At least I'll get your name correct in the end. wink

I will message you. I just got home from work. Thank you all. I would like to learn how to do it myself, as I have multiple cemeteries to cover that aren't listed!

I'm in!  Since I'm the state coordinator for Maryland for the Cemeteries project, I'll start with one of those cemeteries.  I also hope to do some work on my own family, so I listed Pensylvania, too.

Lianne,

Interesting.

I read the instructions but this is all new to me so I am missing some key ideas.

How do I know which profiles in which cemeteries are part of the challenge?

is there a list?  Or do I just pick any profile in any cemetery that is not connected?

What constitutes connecting to the tree?

Thank you.

The project includes all cemeteries. So you can use any cemetery that you or another project member have photographed tombstones in. Connecting to the tree means that prior to the challenge the profile was not connected to A.J. (or didn't exist yet) and by the end of the challenge it is connected to A.J.

I'm in! I've been working (sloooooowwwwwwly) on Mountain View Cemetery's largest section of Commonwealth War Graves, and all of these men are going to need to be connected. If anyone is interested in the First World War, please help out. Library and Archives Canada is digitizing service records, so there is a lot of information available for them.

Nice! One of the Winnipeg cemeteries I eventually want to work on has a Field of Honour with over 12,000 military tombstones. And that's just a small portion of the cemetery! It's a bit of an intimidating project.

Glad that a new challenge has started!  But I think I will sit this one out!  I have alot of things going on at the moment, and although I will still be working on the Cemeteries I have already created, I cannot commit to the challenge at this time!  Good luck to all those participating and I do look forward to the next challenge!!!!

I'm working on the cemeteries I'm working on. Big backlog of pictures. So, I won't be joining this challenge. However, I do not always succeed in connecting the profiles I created for the pictures I've taken.

I'm wondering if there's a category tag I can add to make it easier to find those unconnected cemetery profiles right when I make them?

I wasn't sure anyone would pick up on your question, Elizabeth, since this challenge was from 2015. There is a Category structure in place for unconnected profiles, though not specifically for cemetery profiles. I'm not sure which country you're working, though I've got a feeling it's England. Here are the links for the England Unconnected Profiles category and the top level. England has a lot of sub-levels so you can probably find a much closer match, if I guessed right.

Actually it's USA cemeteries, mostly Connecticut.

Rats, I couldn't tell from your latest contributions so took a stab at it. In case you haven't found them yet, here are the links for US Unconnected and Connecticut Unconnected.
