Poppi Michigan - Did it ever exist (or does it still)?

I have an ancestor who, according to his death certificate and obituary, was born in "Poppi Michigan" in 1851.

I'm unable to find a town named Poppi in Michigan.

Did it ever exist? Perhaps it was absorbed by another town?  Maybe it is now in present day Wisconsin, but by another name?

Any help on this Michigan history would be appreciated!

[Edit:  PS - There is a Poppi in Italy, but that's definitely out of play in this case.  This Poppi was in Michigan, according to his death certificate and his obituary, both from MN.  Outside chance it was in an area of what is now Wisconsin and highly unlikely but still possible due to family history...Minnesota.]

There is a town called Poppi in the Arno valley, Italy. It is 4 miles NW of Bibbiena.

Seems a long shot.

Yeah, I've seen that.  It's the only city named Poppi that I've seen.  However, he definitely wasn't born in Italy, his family were largely farmers who leased land where they lived and were in the U.S. since at least the early 1800's, late 1700's in the New England area, later in the Midwest, with no known Italian relatives.

Thanks for the reply though!

This is a bit of a stretch, but it might be Pompeii in Gratiot County.  Around here it is pronounced Pomp-e-i . It looks like it wasn't settled until 1854, but I have seen many cases where people use a name that came into being later for their birthplace.

After finding a great-uncle whose name was "Plympton" listed on a census as "Clinton" I began to realize that what one hears and what the correct words are don't always match.

Poppi immediately brought Pompeii to mind because it is often so mangled!  However I did find a map showing 2 locations in that area of Gratiot County and the original was Pompei.  When the railroad came through a short distance north the new place became Pompeii.  My husband worked on that railroad and when I told him about Poppi (I said Pop - p -i) he thought it was probably the same place too.  We say O-vid around here too :)  The classics didn't fare well - I didn't know it was supposed to be Ov-id until I got to high school.

Lifelong Midwesterner here. I haven't heard of Poppi, Michigan. I agree with Jill it could be a name used later after settlement.Or maybe it's a typo.
