Norwegian Migrant Categories

Nordic Project are considering setting up the migration categories for Norway. It would seem that the most obvious geographical location to use for Norwegian emigrants, and immigrants, would be using the fylke/county.

That would mean we could add migration categories like "Migrants from Akershus County to Massachusetts" to profiles.

Can anyone think of a reason for NOT using the fylke/county as the smallest "location entity" for Norwegian emigration?

This is the agreed structure for migration https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Migration_Category_Structure but before setting up categories specific for Norway, the question above needs to be discussed.

Hi Maggie. You need to remove the ">" character in the link you provided for it to go to the correct page.
Thanks Mark! Now fixed.

I think the fylke/county to whatever US state/Canadian Province/or other country would work best. Unless someone wants to do a one place emigration study which could be interesting there is no need to go into smaller categories at this time.

Seems to make sense to me.

So this would mean that when looking at, for instance, the '91 Norwegian census, you would be notating the Folketæling at the top? the record I have been working on says Kongeriget Norge, for Norway, which seems quite broad. Wouldn't it be useful to use the Herred? To narrow it down a bit from the whole country? Or am I misunderstanding? my grasp of these records is pretty weak ; ) I think I must be missing something because when I look at the category structure it notes Norway as undivided, and my understanding here is that would remain the same, which makes no sense. Perhaps a slightly more detailed explanation would help me get it?

Thanks,

Stacy

Hello Stacy,

I am not sure if we understand your answer. Maggie is proposing to go down to the counties in Norway, not just the country of Norway.

That makes sense. Only when I look at the records I have they note Norway as the country and then Lesja as the Herred. I don't see anything in between. I am quite confident this is user error on my part.

Hi Stacy. This discussion is only for creating categories for people that left Norway (emigrants from Norway). I'm not sure how your example fits in with the discussion. An 1891 Norway census would not fall into an emigrant category. If you locate a person in the 1891 census in Lesja and that person later left Norway for Wisconsin, they would currently be placed in the Emigrants: Norway to United States category. We are proposing that we create new categories splitting Norway into Counties. Since Lesja was in Oppland (at the time the emigrant moved) we would then put that person in the category Emigrants: Oppland County Norway to Wisconsin, United States if this proposal is accepted.
Thanks for explaining this ; )
