Mayflower Society Application - Glad that's over with!

I finally have gathered all the information I needed to complete the application for the Mayflower Society and it should be sent out later today. Now all I have to do is wait several months for the final results.

As I was doing my research, I ran across a few other connections that may be of interest to others who may be considering joining the Mayflower Society. These are grandfather, father and son. If you descend from any of these individuals, you are probably a Mayflower Descendant.

Isaac Edson (1770 - 1844)James Chilton

Sarah Ford (1777 - 1846) - Francis Cooke

Daniel Thomas Edson  (1802 - 1873)James Chilton, Francis Cooke

Rachel Ann NEEDHAM (1806 - 1888)William Brewster

And if you descend from this couple...

Levi Cornelius Edson (1835 - 1893) James Chilton, Francis Cooke, William Brewster

Harriet Useba PARMAN (1840 - 1890)

I hope this can help someone thinking of joining the Mayflower Society!

Mike,

You can get the first 5-6 generations in the Mayflower Society "Silver Books" for James Chilton and Francis Cooke. I believe that's volume 15 for James Chilton, and volume 12 for Francis Cooke.  I do not personally have these, but perhaps someone on here does.

I do not have any direct connections to either that I am aware of. I just discovered them in my search for my connections.  I am related to both the Fords and Edsons through marriage.

You can do more research online and sometimes find documentation to support the lineage, and for the more recent generations you will need things like birth/marriage/death certificates.

I had a lot of luck searching at www.familysearch.com and  https://www.americanancestors.org/ and here https://library.nehgs.org/.

Hope this helps!

Ken

  Mike,

I don’t descend from anyone on the Mayflower except for the Brewsters, related yes… but not descended from.  We only show as distant cousins as I don’t have any actual Edson relatives that I am aware of…. Several through marriage though.

All I have handy is what is in my G2G message which you have already seen.  I’ll see if I can find something more definite though….

Just taking a quick look here and the connection in WikiTree shows from Sarah Ford to Francis Cooke…

Ancestors and Cousins

6 generations   Find Relationship   Francis Cooke (abt.1583-1663) ancestor
7 generations   Find Relationship   Jean Cooke (bef.1607-abt.1695)

But when I go check out the actual books and member applications for her, I can’t find anything… so I would say No as of this moment and the Wikitree connection finder I used in my G2G note is probably incorrect somewhere. It will take a lot more digging to be sure.

Well it's official!  As of 26 Aug 2022, I am an approved member of the Mayflower Society.  My approved lineage is through William Brewster.  It took just under 5 months from the time it was submitted.... and about 6 months for the research.

Congratulations Ken.
Congratulations!! I have been thinking about submitting. I only discovered my connections to Samuel Fuller, John Howland, Elizabeth Tilley and her parents when I broke down a brick wall this year.
You should do it!  Just pick the one you have the best proof for and go from there.  You can only do one at a time, and then do a supplimental application for each of the others.
Thank you for the information. It helps that all three connections are from my 4th great grandmother. Both her father and mother descend. Her father's line goes to Samuel Fuller. Her mother's father descends from John Howland and Elizabeth Tilley from both his maternal and paternal line.

Congats  am still waiting for my review for Richard Warren..smiley

Welcome to the Mayflower Society family Ken. I know it takes a lot of effort and I was glad when my applications were approved.
Thank you!!!
Congratulations! I’ve been thinking about applying but I'm no where near ready yet. So far, I’ve found connections to a handful of people. I am John Alden’s 10th great granddaughter and William Mullins’s 11th great granddaughter, which has me double-connected to Priscilla Mullins Alden, John’s wife and William’s daughter. I'm also a descendant of Susanna Jackson, 9th great grand grandmother. Peregrine White, 8th great grandfather. Resolved White, 9th great uncle. William White, 9th great grandfather. I'm not sure I'll ever be able to get all the proof I need to join.
Congratulations!!!  I found it to be an intense project, but the genealogist I worked with was supportive.  I got in under Myles Standish.  I recommend that if are unsure, go for it!  Start with the Silver Books and see where you can plug in to those books.  I needed B, M, D records for each person and spouses.  I like that you posted the names of people you proved, which can help others.
Lyn,

Sounds like you have several possibilities. Remember, you only have to prove what hasn't already been verified so it may not be as difficult as you think. You also don't have to prove what is already in the GSMD Silver Books. I had to prove (provide documentation for) four generations, but I know others that have only had to prove one or two. So you should definitely give it a shot. I suggest that you fill out your lineage a bit further back, and then check here:  https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Special%3AMyConnections&c=Mayflower_Passengers&w=McManus-4220.

Forgot to mention that you can only join under one ancestor at a time, so start with the easiest one to prove!

Ken

Edited to add last sentence.
Congratulations Ken!! It's proof that your genealogy skills are wonderful.
Thank you!!!  I'm trying!

Congratulations! I thought about applying for a DAR membership, but I would have to locate my grandfather's birth certificate in Canada and I don't even know where to start to see if one even exists.
by Judi Stutz G2G6 Pilot (341k points)
Thanks!  I wouldn't know where to begin to look in Canada, but surely others on here might have an answer for you. Have you asked the question on G2G?
If you have a death certificate for your grandfather which has his date of birth and location and his parents, you may not need his birth certificate.

By "few months," think at least six. Mine went in last October 10 and was told it could be easily six months.

I know... I was told eight, read online might be as much as eleven.... sigh....

I submitted my application about 10 days ago.  I was told that processing time had been falling, but that I should expect to wait five months.
by David McNicol G2G6 Mach 5 (53.7k points)
Might end up being less than that. I was told 6 to 8 months when I submitted the paperwork, and it was less than five for the certificate.

I had an easy one for the Mayflower Society as my first cousin is a member but after the drudgery they put me through I gave up, not worth the expense. I sent them a clear line of decendants and my cousins name, figured it was a no-brainer. NOT!

They do require good documentation and the expense is worth it in my opinion.  But it's not for everyone.

Congrats Ken,  I'm sure it felt like a mountain climb in ill-fitting high heeled shoes to reach this achievement.  Your relatives will thank you.......someday.

Now for my new soapbox topic - Parental Confidence Markings.

As one of the newest members of the MS, could you rouse your fellow MS membership on WikiTree to make sure their MS lineage parental confidences are all marked "confident" and source that with either your Silver book citations, or MS ancestry number, or MS membership certificate numbers in the Source section and/or leave that vital information in the Comment section, if the profile is locked?  Because of the level of documentation you needed to arrive at this momentous occasion, you must understand the value of passing that hard earned information forward for others who also struggle to prove lineage.  We all know the difficulty of proving parentage increases each successive generation away from the current generations.

I beg all of your fellow MS compatriots who are on this site to do the same. Let's get these profiles as perfected as possible!  It's the right thing to do and so easy to accomplish.

I will now jump off of my box and quietly scurry away into the dark recesses of ye olde towne streets.

Agree!  I even found a few in my research that were in the silver books that were still marked uncertain, so there's a lot of work to do!  If they are in the silver books, they should be marked confident and use the GSMD books as a source.
