Can anyone help with William Hodgkins born in Vermont, USA in 1818

Question

I found William buried in my local cemetery in Crescent City, Del Norte, California. He has a nice gravestone (though broken) with birth and death information. Other than an 1870 US census record taken in Crescent City saying he was a Saddler, and was living alone, I have been unable to find any other information. Can anyone help? Thank you.

I added a California great register from 1896.

But there was bonus material in that register - several other men I've been working on from the same cemetery show in the image, so you helped me more than you knew you were.
