Hi everyone!

500px-Meet_our_Members_Photos-14.jpgIt's time to meet another one of our wonderful WikiTreers. This week's member is Coen Dijkgraaf

Coen became a Wiki Genealogist in March of last year.  He is a Project Coordinator for our Netherlands Project.

When and how did you get interested in genealogy?

Genealogy has been a hobby of mine since July 1996 when Gerard Dijkgraaf (a non-relation via the Dijkgraaf name) made contact with my sister, asking her who her parents were, as they were doing a one-name-study of all Dijkgraaf. Funnily enough, they already had my details and that of my younger brother, even though neither of us were born in the Netherlands, but my sister was.

What are some of your interests outside of genealogy?

Reading science fiction and fantasy, watching Netflix, boardgaming.

What is your genealogical research focus?

Initially, my research was just about my direct ancestors and their immediate families and also one name studies of Dijkgraaf, Rolffs and Smouter, but more recently I've started tracing down to all my blood relatives and added more surnames to research.

Are you are interested in certain surnames or locations?

World wide one name study surnames, Dijkgraaf, Rolffs, Smouter, Meeuwis and currently in the Netherlands, Kurvink, Oversteeg.  Nearly all of my ancestry is from the Netherlands, in particular South Holland, but also other parts of the Netherlands. Starting also to delve into my German ancestry and also have Spanish ancestors.

Do you have a favorite genealogical discovery or breakthrough?

My favourite answer on G2G was
Trying to find the death of Jacob Meijer although I still haven't got a definite date, it did help narrow it down and brought out some more information.

My favourite breakthrough was when researching an ancestor
Jan de Jong (bef.1746-1800)  and I found a previous wife mentioned, and then realised that there was a duplicate profile for him already on WikiTree.  So a merge and profile cleanup done and now another researcher is shown as a living cousin.

What is your toughest brick wall currently?

Trying to find the death date of Jacob Meijer. I am still in the process of creating profiles for my ancestors on WikiTree, and double checking to try and eliminate any errors, and then I'll look at tackling some of those brick walls.

How long have you been on WikiTree?

I originally joined WikiTree in December 2013, as I like the concept of a shared tree as then you can help and be helped by others. However I found the GEDCOM upload and matching process a bit clunky, so I didn't actually start creating profiles on WikiTree until March of 2021.

What do you spend the most time doing on WikiTree?

Currently a mix between uploading Gedcoms and creating profiles from my research, I also take part in Thons and Challenges.

Which project or projects are you most involved in?

I'm involved in the Netherlands Project (formerly Dutch Roots), where the aim is to have accurate and good-quality profiles for Dutch ancestors. When I take part on Friday Date Night I search for dateless profiles in the Netherlands, and for Source-a-Thon and Connect-a-Thon I also target profiles for people from the Netherlands.  I've also just become a Project Coordinator and have been involved in discussions as to how to progress the Netherlands Project and to make managing it less effort.

How can others help the Netherlands Project?

We can always do with more help creating Netherlands profiles, and finding sources for existing Netherland profiles, we are currently refreshing some of the Netherlands Project pages and provincial teams have been set up.

What inspires you to contribute so much of yourself to WikiTree's mission? Do you consider your work here to be part of your legacy?

As I've collected quite a bit of information over the years, yes, I consider it my legacy to leave it for others searching for their ancestors.

What is your favorite feature or function on WikiTree?

I like the new Living Cousins feature, but what I love most about WikiTree is the co-operative community.

What feature or function would you most like to see added or improved?

I think the duplicate matching when creating a profile needs a bit of improving, it quite often lists people that obviously can't be a match, but sometimes fails to list one that is actually a duplicate.

Do you have a story about how someone was helped through your participation on WikiTree?

For this week's WikiTree Challenge for Hasse Fröberg there was a family rumour that they were descended from a well known Dutch person
Louis de Geer, however he and quite a lot of his family didn't have profiles, so I and a few others from the Netherlands Project created profiles and added sources. There are indications that this may actually be true, so we will see later on this week if that helped there. Other than that I've been adding dates and sources to profiles that are missing them, or adding templates to indicate the need for further research.

Do you have any tips for someone who wants to get more involved in our community?

Joining a project or projects relevant to your ancestry helps, as then you have a group of people you can ask questions of on Discord

What could we do to inspire more people to participate in our mission?

Possibly it is more a matter of reigniting the interest of existing members. We've observed that 37% percent of people in our Netherlands Project have not made any edits in the last 3 months.
So re-igniting those members would get more people participating.  Maybe we send out an email survey to inactive members to find out why they are no longer participating.

Hi Coen,

Great interview and we're so lucky to have you in our project

Congratulations, Coen, and thank you for all you do for our tree.  The work of the Netherlands Project is greatly appreciated by those of us who are working on New Netherlands profiles.  I note that one of the names you follow is van Oostroom or van Oostrum. I have been working on the family of https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Janszen-27 , Hendrick Oosteroom, for some time now.  Maybe we're not yet connected cousins!

Thanks Mark.  It's quite possible that once I finish adding my know ancestors, that we will have a common one. It might be the Oostroom/Oosteroom/Oostrum name or variant, or other surname altogether, that is still to be discovered.

Congratulations for being nominated as member of the week, Coen.

If you have any questions regarding your German ancestors, don't hesitate to ask the Germany Project or me directly.
by Dieter Lewerenz G2G Astronaut (3.1m points)

Thanks Dieter.

One of my German ancestors is Johann Harm Rohlfs and possibly his wife as well.  So yes, once I start in on that line I will surely look at the German Project and maybe ask for your assistance

As it happens, Coen, I recently did some more work on the family of the German-American furniture designer, Charles Rohlfs, https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Rohlfs-48 .

Lovely interview Coen.  I too love the cousin feature; it has helped with my quest for DNA confirmation.  And thanks for all of your hard work with the Netherlands Project.
