Those funny Scotland pronunciations

It's kinda just one of things I've always known but both place names and surnames with a "z" in them may not be what you think, and why it might be hard to find them in the Scottish records if the recorder was spelling as it sounds

name and place = Dalziel = "Dal eel" (edit: or Dee - Yell, ref comments)
name = Menzies  = "Ming Us"
Place = Finzean = "Fing-an"

there is likely more, please add

Dalziel = "Dee el"
Place (Aberdeenshire) Garioch = "Gee ry"

Place (Ayrshire) Culzean = "Cul ane"

Place & name (Aberdeenshire) Strachan = "Straw n"

There's hundreds of them ;-)
oh yeah dee el , and how could I forget Garioch (seein as I live here) a common surname derived from that is Gerrie, even though I know it's "Gee Ry"

"Strawn" totally just how you tell people whose surname are Strachan what to look for LOL
I think the surname Garrick came from Garioch too now that you got me think about it
I have cousins with the last name Garioch.  Sometimes pronounced "Geery", other times as "Garry-ock", other times as "Geh-ree-ock".

Nice to "meet" another Scot living in Scotland   Trouble is we're so used to them that we forget the problems they cause "non-natives"

Anyone visiting Scotland for the first time would do well to learn the proper pronunciation of the capital city. It's "Edin-burra." And it's not just names... for instance, sgian dubh (the dagger that is usually found stuffed into the kilted man's sock) is pronounced "skeen doo." And the "good health" toast, slainte mhath, is pronounced "slontcha va."
