How to find evidence a marriage record relates to the correct family

I am trying to locate parents of James King named on his baptism certificate as William and Mary.  I have found a marriage record for a couple that seems to be a match in terms of a nearby location and dates: (https://search.findmypast.co.uk/record?id=GBPRS%2FHERT%2F004946682%2F00839&parentid=GBPRS%2FM%2F73127062%2F1 ).  Can anyone advise how I might be able to corroborate or disprove that this is the correct couple? Thank you

Before investigating questions I like to quickly run through people's ancestry and I immediately hit a problem with your grandfather.

The situation is confused by him changing his surname but the Leonard Day who died in Kent in 1979 had a date of birth 28 Feb 1897 whereas Leonard King/Day was born 11 March 1898.
Thank you for taking the time to look at this Matthew.

Leonard's date of birth was established as 11.03.1898 from the 1939 Register, where he was resident at Wray House, Chelsea. The location was corroborated from first hand family knowledge. From there his birth certificate was obtained, giving details of his mother and father, George and Annie Day.  Location and George King's occupation also confirmed from first hand family knowledge.

Additional sources for Leonard's father were the certificates of marriage to Amy Ward and Ruth Day. Census records for 1901 and 1911 give mother's and father's names and again agree with family knowledge of profession and location. I have been able to confirm the names of some of his siblings via the descendants of one of his sisters, so I believe this is the correct family.  However, I haven't yet been able to find a marriage record for George and Annie Day, or a birth record for Annie.

We were told by Leonard's pension company that he died on 10 July 1979 at 81 years 8 months old.  This is a discrepancy of 4 months, but could have been a transcription error or misundertanding.  Subsequently I made contact with the family of Leonard's second marriage and details of his death location obtained.  Probate records agree with the date and location of death but I am unable to account for the birth date of 28 February 1897 and haven't been able to find a birth record for either a Leonard King or Day that would be a good match.

I hope that is of some help.  And my thanks once again.
Thank you for your reply. Yes I saw the 1939 register entry for Wray House and then spent some time reading about its history as accommodation for married policemen. It was sold to a property developer some years ago and converted to flats. It looks quite impressive on google maps even today and I will check it out the next time I'm in the area.

I'm perfectly satisfied that you have the right Leonard King/Day and his date of birth is compatible with the Q2 1898 registration but his death details remain a little mysterious. I'm not sure where the 28 Feb 1897 birthdate on FreeBMD comes from but it seems at odds with the other information.

I couldn't find the marriage of Leonard's parents either but this one between George King and Annie Boswell looks the most promising. https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:2DZQ-7W5
Yes, thank you. I thought Annie Boswell looked promising too, but I've tried to trace the family back and found no link.  The only other clue I have is that the family thinks Annie's mother's birth name was McLean.  I have found a McLean / Day marriage that is close, although the family was in Croyden at the time and I can't find a record of a daughter - so no luck there either, sadly.

I had been to the Wray House flats before they were sold off - quite small and dark - not at all as they appear now on the web site!

There are few different techniques you can use. The marriage is in Rickmansworth and the Baptism is in Barnett which are about 15 miles apart.

In FMP it is easy to search for any baptisms with the surname King and the parents William and Mary within 20 miles of Barnett. E.g. this search:
https://www.findmypast.co.uk/search/results?sourcecategory=life+events+%28bmds%29&collection=parish+baptisms&sid=102&lastname=king&yearofbirth=1798&yearofbirth_offset=10&keywordsplace=barnet%2c+hertfordshire%2c+england%2c+united+kingdom&fatherfirstname=william&fatherfirstname_variants=true&motherfirstname=mary&motherfirstname_variants=true&keywordsplace_proximity=20&sourcecountry=england

That produces 261 hits! Also some of the baptisms are in Rickmansworth.

This baptism in Rickmansworth to William and Jane in the same year that James was baptised seems more likely to belong to those parents:

Here is an image of the marriage of James and Rachel. https://www.ancestry.com/sharing/26773175?h=deb5e2

It doesn't add much info though. One of them was young enough to need consent of parents.
Thank you Rob - that's really helpful background and useful information for the future.  Much appreciated.
