WikiTree profile: James Carroll
in Genealogy Help by Jamie Lacourse G2G Rookie (250 points)
There are a number of records on James and his family at FamilySearch that document this family, including his marriage. The marriage record with Florence Hill confirms his mother, Mary Demlop, but raises a question about his father who is named as “P. Carroll.” This could be a simple error, but needs some investigation.
James Dunlop Carroll.
George:

I am seeing the same types of things that you are.  There is something that needs some exploration.

Roger, you are quite correct. Reviewing and adding all the sources to the profiles of this family would help resolve the discrepancies.
Jamie:

Where did you get the name Thomas for the father?   The profile cites ancestry.com, but I am not seeing it when I look there.

George:

ok. Thx

The Pennsylvania, U.S. World War I Veterans Service and Compensation Files database on ancestry.com has Veterans Compensation Application No. 107266 dated February 14, 1934, by James Carroll:

It lists his birth in Pittsburgh on January 19, 1891, and says that his parents were Patrick Carroll and Mary Barmeller, both deceased.

It's also interesting because it talks about where he served overseas.

This has a different name for the mother … something else that needs to be resolved.
Definitely.  This record just seems to me to be relatively reliable because he clearly completed it himself.
Roger Thank you so much! I cancelled Ancestry before I really knew how to use it. I also have to figure out how to remove the wrong parents I had added.
Jamie:

    It's in your email.

Birth registers are available for Pittsburgh from 1870 until the state started issued birth certificates. Information about requesting copies is available at https://www.carnegielibrary.org/research-overview/genealogy/allegheny-county-birth-and-death-records/
