My maternal grandfather was a Chief Petty Officer in the Indian Royal navy in the  1940s and l was wondering how I could get information about his service there. His name was Abdul Rahman and he was born around 1923 in Kashmir India. He left to marry my English grandmother in 1948 and lived in Chatham Kent England the rest of his life-

1940s would still be British, yes?  Have you tried the UK National Archives?  (My first father-in-law (English) served in India during and just after WWII - last ranked as RSM.)
Thanks , Ill give it a go as that is where I found my Jamaican 4th ggrandfather who did 20 years service in the Royal Navy in the 1850s onwards until he came to England. I seem to have a very nautical family. Yes I suppose India didnĀ“t get its independance until 1949 so it would be in the English archives.
Ack!  You are not Connected to the Tree.  (I was about to check your steps from a recent EPOW support profile, whose father was West Indian born.)
How do i connect?
Keep building your family upwards, and sideways, until you find a relative, or a spouse of a relative, who is already Connected.

Sometimes it happens relatively (hehehe) soon, sometimes it can take weeks, or months, or years.
Thanks, I think mine will be more years!
